Has peter now done enough to be considered the best stock car driver of all time. I have been involved as a driver and official and spectator for 50 years and attended almost all NZ champs during that time, and after seeing his drive last night, I think Peter has earned that title over the likes of Kevin Free, Big Bad Charlie, John Hanright, Grahame Stretch, Tony Mac, Dave Evans. I have seen and admired them all, but Pete, I think you are now "Simply The Best"

While taking nothing away from Pete and his excellent drive, his job was made vastly easier as a result of the magnificent block job performed by Shane Penn. Shane spent that whole race thinking half a lap ahead and basing his actions on that thinking in order to protect Pete.

Shane spent that whole race thinking half a lap ahead and basing his actions on that thinking in order to protect Pete. While Shane did a brilliant job thinking ahead, he wasn't able to protect Pete all the time, and it was Pete's skill and balls that got him around some of those Rotorua cars, and for that, he is one of the best drivers the sport has ever seen. Sadly, he has never managed to grab that 1NZ Superstock title, which some people seem to think he needs to be considered the best ever. Pete, you're a legend. Four New Zealand titles in Stockcars and your ability to read a race make you the best driver the sport has ever seen in my books. And IMO the Stockcar title is harder to get, as there is much more competition in the Stockcar class than in the Superstocks. I hope you can nail down that Superstock title before you retire, which I hope is a long way away. Here's to at least another 15 years of Stockcar and Superstock racing for you

As a Panther fan, I'll be cheering with them. A team that is capable of taking the title from them, with the Panthers in such great form, deserves it. I'm just disappointed that last nights final was such a fizzer, it was a very anti-climatic end to what was an amazing weekend of racing. The Tigers have a team that is capable of beating the Panthers, but were just out classed and out raced on the night, best of luck to them in the future.

The most impressive aspect of Rees' drive against Rotorua for me was his ability to swat the waiting cars out of the way without losing speed. He was hitting those cars at full noise, and his timing and car control were just superb. And his blocking for Penn in the final was textbook and clinical. He was a deserving winner of the Spike Trophy, IMHO.

The Rotorua drivers made it easy for him, trying to block him on the corners. A bit of a hit - OK a lot more than a bit last night - and they are off to the wall.
But credit to the panthers. They raced well.

They raced well. i would believe that it is harder getting around block cars in corners but the point is, this shows you how rees can handle high pressure situations. with osborne tailing him a majority of the race and rees shunting block cars out of his way knowing that he could mess up at any moment shows a hell of a lot of courage

I am not a P fan but he is an awesome driver who sure brings ALOT to our sport. I am not either but definitely concede that Peter Rees is a one of a kind legend.. and its darn annoying he is a Palmy driver.. haha. While alot of our favourites from the past were amazing at Hitting, or Blocking, or Racing, and "only" excellent at the other 2, Pete is stunning at all 3. He has put himself on such a pedastal that reading the race chat from Huntly NZ Champs, the main thing i was thinking was what the heck is Peter Rees doing cos it didnt appear he was a front runner, or in the thick of the action. I still dont know what happened to him up there actually. No offense at all is meant, it is just really odd to not see his name mentioned. The other aspect is his reliability, which possibly failed him at Huntly (as i said, i still dont know), but it is very very rare to see him taken out early and not be on the grid for the next race to continue his onslaught on competitors in one way or the other. Congrats to himself, his crew, car and engine building team cos that is one hell of a package, and combined with his skill, the best!

Undoubtedly the best driver in the country at present if not ever. Gave some very experienced teams racers a lesson on Sunday night .
Very clever racing , and certainly unstoppable even when he was rolled, still fired up and away again. Would be giving Dave Evans a good nudge in the Best Driver of all time stakes..

Would be giving Dave Evans a good nudge in the Best Driver of all time stakes.. Having seen his DVD, reading the post article from teams and listening to his speech for winning teams and the Spike award, i would say he has taken the best advice from the best mentors which has helped him alot.
