Subaru Legacy- Check engine warning light comes on about 1 or 2 times a week. Could it be caused by fuel pump.

Yes it COULD be, but the best bet is to take it somewhere and get the fault code from the ECU, that will tell you exactly whats wrong. If you talk nicely to a good subaru shop they should get the code for you almost free of charge.

Try this. Under the dash near the steering column there should be two sets of plus which aren't connected - one set black, one set green. You plug the black ones in, then turn the key on - don't start the car. Count the flashes of the check engine light and this will tell you the fault code. Long flash is first digit, short dashes are second digit. So one long flash then five short flashes would be error code 15. There can be multiple error codes. Turn the car off then disconnect the plugs. Here's a short table of common error codes, it's for a turbo one but should be similar - homepages.ihug.co.nz/~ccgrant/celcheck.htm - google legacy fault codes if your particular one isnt on this list. My old Forester had check engine light come on, using this method I worked out the Water Temp sensor was faulty, got it replaced which was quite cheap - and the car ran better after that too.

non turbo should be ok on 91 unless there over 10/1 compression, most of the time the computer will retard timing when pinking on the lower grade fuel , the check engine light wont come on and you wont know that it has happen, u may hear the engine pinking under load or laboring in too higher gear the check light will come on if the computer cannot retard the timing enough, if u dont run your tank dry top it up with some 95 every now and then it should sort it out

they are 10.7:1 compression. I sure as hell would NEVER put 91 in it.

Ok, so that settles it? bop, dont run 91 in it anymore and hopefully you shouldn't see the check engine light again!

Run 95 octane fuel in every car.If you do a proper mileage check from full tank to full tank you will find you can go further on a tank of 95.The difference to fill a car with 91 to 95 is about $3.You will find you can drive about 40-50 kms more with 95 and the car performs better.I have done this test on 5 cars we have owned now.91 is not even fit for a lawn mower.

And if you do start running it on 95, long trips go for Ultimate 98. Awesome for long trips. After a while you will feel the acceleration will get better too.Up to you
