I am not a mechanic nor an engineer so dont shoot me down in flames for asking this....its just a random brain fart that I thought I'd put out there..
Are there any pros or cons of a boxer motor being used in the stockcar class?. Subaru have a 6 cylinder 3.6 litre boxer motor which is obviously getting close to the 4 litre max stockcar rule.
Do the boxer motors offer a weight advantage over the Holden V6 or Ford?. Would the lower centre of gravity of the boxer motor be of any advantage?

Been tried and was a competitive car. There was a write about it sometime ago. Im pretty sure it got outlawed....

Apparently you can buy a big bore kit out of australia that is safe to rev to 9000 and with a turbo that puts out 900hp.
this 3 time NZ champ reckons Naturally aspirated it would put out enough power to make a super stock motor work.
So he bought one and is building at new car for it for this season.
Keeping the weight low was a big plus evidently.

Aren't the subaru engines a 4 valve and therefore not allowed in stockcars?
Leigh Cossey 22a has the old kuriger car that originally trialed the subaru engine. It has been converted to holden v6 after the trial ended and was disallowed to continue.
At the end of the day stockcar engines are such low output you just want to go with something common and readily available.

They are way out of date mate, totally agree. I tried with SNZ back in 2004 to run the Toyota V8. No was the short answer. |

getting back on track, wasnt the 4 valve rule originally brought in because of a subaru motor in a standard stock car?

True, but the TS3 diesel was a bit different in that it was a 3 cylinder, 6 piston (opposed) supercharged two stroke engine. Made about 135hp from its 3500cc. Not the fastest, but sounded great! Anyway, back to speedway - I think there is a lot to be said for keeping the stock car class restricted to cheap basic engines as it is currently, but At the same time if there are other engines that can be run primarily in OM form, then they should be looked at. I actually would love to see the 350 crate motor be allowed in superstocks too - is that still being trialled? Ie one of the Marx cars? |
