Might be a bit early with people still returning home but on reflection what were your highlights? What changes (if any) would you like to see?
1. Highlights/Changes.
- The action - simply staggering! Someone who has attended every event since it's inaugral in the early 80's might be able to correct me but was that the best two night action in the history of the event? Congratulations to every driver, crew etc
- Congratulations Hawkes Bay! I'd like to hear from someone in the know, what made it possible for their team to win this year? I think the win is an encouragement to those teams that haven't won yet and for those teams that haven't featured in the top three for a while - it's actually achievable!
- The Brits also make the event come alive. I think this the first time for some of the Brit drivers have competed at the Palmy teams event? If so awesome!
- The Giants. Love them or not what a great addition to the event the Gizzy Giants are. You can't argue they add to the anticipation and enjoyment of the event. Good decision to bring them in the event and now that Peter Rees has publicly confirmed "I'll be racing for Gisborne until I retire" Gizzy should be a regular team.
- Videohub livestreaming. I was one of about 6000? livestreamers and apart from the first night hiccups the coverage was effective.
- Maybe I'm getting on a bit and more tolerant but I thought the lead commentator has improved! I just thought there wasn't as many cliches and wisecracks or local bias. That made the the listening more pleasant and as an outsider (non-Palmy) feel I "own" this event.
I would like to hear more regular pit updates that tries to involves all teams, a better analysis of the teams event as a whole including history linking in great teams racers from all teams and regular commentator links with the officials to provide officiating updates. This would help listeners understand the rules and why decision were or weren't made.
- Time management. Do we have to have the coin toss done in the middle of the grass? Why can't these be done before the teams drive out into the areana?
I'm not sure whether to laugh or cringe but the anticipation is high everytime the infield commentator throws the coin in the air (why does the team that has travelled the furtherest have to call) then bend down, struggle to find the bloody coin in the grass, then forget who called heads or tails!
Summary
Any sports competition is dependent on evenly matched teams. The same one or two teams winning regularly gets boring and spectators switch off.
Palmy teams is no different. The excitement and success of superstock teams racing hinges on evenly matched races but most importantly the economic situation of the 12 superstocks teams and their speedway clubs they represent.
The success of Palmy teams in my opinion is only as exciting if we the spectators cannot reliably predict the outcome in advance.
I would love to see those teams that have struggled recently to be able to be in a position to challenge the top teams and win - like Hawkes Bay did this year. The lack of intensity of any competition points to an imbalance in clubs' funding options. I would not like the gap between the top teams and the smaller teams become insurmoutable.
Finally, was the event worth the $100 - yep! Thanks Palmerston North speedway that was a fantastic experience (via live streaming) and I thoroughly enjoyed the meeting!
