This is a common problem in the Saloon class, I have just found cracks right on the valve seat of one of my heads, last time this happened I replaced the head but I am going to repair this time and see how it goes.
If you ask this question on an American forum like speed talk the advice is to use "lock-n-stitch" system instead of welding, this is a process of drilling down into the crack, threading and installing a tapered insert, with a long crack this is done in series until the crack is a line of inserts that can then be flattened and machined just like the parent metal around it, I have seen photos of valve seats cut right over the inserts.
I believe this is a popular repair in the Diesel repair industry also.
Franklin Engineering Services in Pukekohe can do this so I dropped my head off today, Ill let you know how it goes.
Cheers Brendon
