Last night continued the trend of short (in terms of races) tenures of tracks holding the Rees Shield. It was Waikato's fourth attempt at nabbing the shield and it was fourth time lucky for them. With it being a little late in the season I don't imagine they will have a chance to defend it this season but fingers crossed perhaps a first defence at the Huntly Teams event early next season. A full history on the Rees Shield is available over at Percy's NZ Speedway percysnzspeedway.com/reesshield.html

Was only aware it was raced for after the fact and I was at the track. On reflection I remember hearing a snippet from the commentary along the lines of "points don't matter in this one it's about who's across the line first"
Why after umpteen years times 4 of attending speedway we can't have a decent working public address system each and every time both astounds and peeves me.

I know it's getting off topic, but your comment about the PA system is spot on. I spoke with Mintie on Saturday morning, and he and myself, along with the likes of Paul Hickey and Malcolm Sines, have all commentated at a lot of tracks over a lot of years (and always for major meetings obviously, the only time generally tracks bring in extra commentators), and we've all, a number of times, had to do a heap of work at the track on the Saturday - even sometimes having to spend our own money on top of our time - in a bid to try and make things better from the first night to the second night. But the question is why. Why isn't already tested and working before the meeting starts? Tracks know 12-18 months ahead of time that they've got these meetings, and surely something like the sound system should be up and running properly at every meeting, not just the major ones. All tracks should have a permanent FM system installed, they all get big meetings at some point, and the only extra required should be some extra microphones on a major weekend. Barry B
