Wondering if anyone can help?
As a kid (mid 80's- early 90's), one car that I remember the most was a yellow 'tank' (not being familiar with the jargon I intend to mean a stockcar with all the side braces etc covered over). It looked incredibly strong and used to make some big hits. I seem to recall it being dealing out more hits than the other cars.
Was it Eddie Hawkins?
My local track was Temarua, but dad used to take us to others and I think I saw it at maybe rotorua or some other as well.
Any pics of such a car would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

;)Would it have been Robbie James in 14p?? Tank chassis/Ford V8 and Morris 8 body. Have a look through the Speedway Archives page up top and sift through.Im sure you'll find the one you're after.

This may be completely wrong but for my own curiosity:
Tony Darroch had a big 'ole ugly yellow tank 68b with "The Gatsby" or something like that written on it and we last saw it being towed up the Bombay Hills as we returned from the Palmy Teams one year and thought it must be coming to Akld but it never appeared as far as I know...

Nice photo of a unique looking car!, Could have been it- not sure (was a long time ago lol)
I remember my bro and I used to call it 'the crane' as it was very angular and might even have had tread plate panels on it.
I recall it being larger than a lot of the other cars.
The one in the photo looks pretty big tho- isn't memory a bugger!!
cheers

I think the story about the 14p tank of robbie james goes like this was sold to mike watson (who now lives in rotarua and crews for there std stock team) along time back and apparently got a huge hit and twisted it, i do know that the seat came out and went into my old car that mike also owned at the time i cant remember at this stage what he did with it maybe ask mr watson next time you see him at the track
