I was checking out past NZ Stockcar champs from this web site www.speedwayarchive.co.nz/asp/StockcarNZ.asp and at the bottom of the listing. There is another list for SCODA Championship 1955 - 62 What does SCODA stand for, and what's the difference between these cars and stockcars and are there any still running.

SCODA stands for Stockcar Owners and Drivers Association. They were the sanctioning body for stockcar racing before the ACU Spedway Control Board and then Speedway NZ became involved. The New Zealand Championships held at the Epsom Showgrounds in Auckland and Gloucester Park in Onehunga were proper NZ champs, but because they were Scoda sanctioned have been forgotten when some history has been written. According to SNZ the first NZ Stockcar Champs were at Palmerston North in 1966 which is not correct. Thankfully the late John Webster addressed this in his book Weekend Warriors, and I have attempted to get the pre 1966 records published whenever I can. The Savell boys have also recognised the correct history in the Speedway Archive. The car rules were similar to those of 1966, and there is no reason why Scoda could not be re formed as a sactioning body if SNZ was dumped, although, no doubt there would be a gigantic legal battle. Gavin.

Hi Gavin, Thanks for the information, but where can one get a copy of the Weekend Warrior by the late John Webster and also more information on the old stockcars of the Yesteryears.
Plus i must agree with all the members on this Discussion Group you are the Greatest.
Without you and Macgor educating us on the history of the New Zealand Stockcars it might have all been forgotten and only have been just memories.
Peter

This is the Scoda Drivers badge from the Epsom Showgrounds. This one belonged to the late Des McCollum who was tragically killed during a NZ V Aust teams race at Epsom in February 1959.
