The Marlborough Express | Friday, 12 December 2008
Young speedway fan will be remembered The South Island speedway community will gather in force at Eastern States Speedway tomorrow night to celebrate the life of young fan Charlie Higgins.
In March last year Charlie was tragically killed in a freak accident when a sprint car cleared the safety fence and struck him at Eastern States Speedway.
Large fields of drivers from Christchurch and Nelson as well as Eastern States will be on hand for the annual Charlie's Fun Night to honour the 13 year old who was never far from speedway helping out as a runner, on pit gate and as an assistant rep.
Yellow ribbons will be on sale at the gate on the night and there will be a bucket collection for donations.
This year's proceeds will go to the Heart Children Foundation.
The rest of New Zealand's speedway community is also getting behind the initiative with donation buckets expected to be passed around other tracks.
Drivers will travel to the meeting free of charge and race for no prizemoney, though special trophies donated by Charlie's mother Trich Dixon will be up for grabs as will a 10 piece tool kit donated by Basis in Renwick.
Speedway fans will be in for a treat tomorrow night with one of Charlie's favourite classes, ATVs, making a rare appearance on track. Big numbers are expected in both the ATV open and ATV 400 classes.
Ten classes in total will be on track tomorrow night with superstocks, stockcars, streetstocks, ministocks, youth ministocks, productions, saloons and sidechairs joining the ATVS.
Dixon said it was great to see the speedway community supporting the night and had even heard of drivers who couldn't attend offering to lend cars to others so they could participate.
Gates will open at the earlier than usual time of 5pm with racing underway from 6pm. Gate charges have been reduced to $5 for adults and $2 for children.

Congrats to all involved in Charlies Night, what an awesome thing to be part of. There was quite a special atmosphere there last night. We had a bit of drama with the seatbelts in Codys car for the first race so there was a quick driver change(Back to Captain thunder--- Cody) for that one and I took over for the next 2. Got 3rd in that one from 6 on the grid and really got a feel for the Rees 21n after about 3-4 laps. Off grid 5 for the last one and the ES boys (apparently) thought it was Cody driving again and decided it was time to deal to 21n.So I had a few visits to the wall and managed to get going again but with a flat right front (and eventual black flag? ) our night was done. I had a ball and enjoyed the contact and being in a tight 16 car feild made it all worth while. Again thanks to the ES gang,Trich especially for the night and Blaine (Woppitt Pilot)Blythe for the kind words of encouragement ;D A special mention must go to Murray,Pauline,Cody and the rest of the Teece family for letting an old broken down has been have a drive in the family racecar. Its an honor to part of a great team and I hope I didnt embarrass myself too much. Well done Eastern States!! PS:Seeing the Boote Buggy in action again was a high light and we have yet to it at full potential.

Well, it was my first visit to Eastern States Speedway last night and I was overwhelmed with the hospitiality and greeting I got from all that I met!! What a fantastic bunch of people!. I would like to thank Shane Best and George Gibbs for the opportunity to shoot at the track, and also to ESS President Tim Alexander, and his club secretary for ok'ing my visit. I had a fantastic night, got to meet lots of wonderfull people, and privilaged to share in Charlies night. Well done to ESS for a one-in-a-million meeting. Seeing ATV's race was a first for me - those bugger are mad! But not as much as the sidechairs (who I have not seen race for a looooooong time.) Having a big feild of superstocks was a real treat and there was some hot racing to be seen. Some random snaps below. More online late this week when we get home from holiday. Drew A minutes silence.... Supers... mini slide Stox This blokes night ended real quick - T.K.O after two laps of the second race of the night.... and I was the first thing he saw when he woke up - LOL (had my head in the car to see if he was breathing...) 3 wheelers! ;D Streets all good. 5 saloons played.. And the mad buggers on the sidecars!! Drew
