Dont forget if you are intending to come and race for 'The Charlie' a phone call to Gerry or David would be appreciated. However if you decide at the last minute just turn up, you'll be most welcome.

45 entries on the list now - there's actually 46 listed, but 509S has excluded himself - fancy having to work on raceday!
Best news - weather forecast for Sunday is for fine weather, light winds and 21*.

Chris, I dont know how your name got on the list either if you didnt enter. I will make sure it gets taken off. Starting to wonder if we will ever see you bring that new hotrod of yours down to our track?? Thanks to everyone who has entered, it is shaping up to be a mean as avo of good hard stockcar racing. Anyone else who wants to enter just flick me a text or a phone call 0276971092. Also I will b around the pits in Stratford on Saturday night, so if anyone up there is keen or has any questions just hunt me down. (Im the one with the black mohawk)

Here's what yesterday's Wanganui Chronicle had to say about the Great Man:
They're coming from all areas to try to win the Charlie Berntsen Trophy, but they might need help carrying it home. The second running of the event, on Sunday from 2pm at Brent Boddy Speedway, will see more than 40 stockcars from all over the North Island, as against just 22 last year when the event was run for the first time. Included on Sunday are the four most recent New Zealand stockcar champions - last year s Allan McRobbie (Rotorua), Gerry Linklater (Wanganui, 2006), Peter Rees (Palmerston North, 2005) and Dale Robertson (Wellington, 2004). Initiator of the event is another Wanganui man in David Bullot, a very keen student of the turbulent career of "Big Bad Charlie" including his rocky relationship with the late Palmerston North promoter Ray New. Berntsen, an old-fashioned stockie who couldn't bear the thought that the sport was turning into racing cars, loved a scrap on the track but also won the New Zealand title in 1982. The trophy is made from a Holden V6 crank and flywheel - and weighs 18kg. No sweat to Charlie, though, he carries it around one handed. For a while anyway. The trophy and yearly miniatures were organised by Berntsen s son-in-law Daniel Matthews. This year the miniature is a chainsaw crankshaft! Wanganui's 18V Tony James took the title last year. With 40 entries up to yesterday afternoon, Bullot believes there may be more to come from participants in the New Zealand under-23 championships at Stratford tomorrow. Entries have come from Tauranga, Christchurch, Rotorua, Wellington, Palmerston North and Stratford. Bullot says the intention is to make the Berntsen Trophy one of the biggest annual meetings in the Central area. The unique trophy, known as "The Charlie", is seen to be an attraction. Bernsten started stockcar racing in 1962 and finished 22 years later, although his car remains in Wanganui. Berntsen started with Charlie written across the top of his windscreen, but a couple of incidents in Palmerston North saw words added, until "Big Bad Charlie" was there for all to see. The latter incident involved him and New. Berntsen says: "It wasn t a row - just a disagreement." He's now patron of the Wanganui Stockcar Club and one imagines he will look disapprovingly if there's too much racing and not enough "interplay" on Sunday. After all, it's his day. Racing starts at 2pm, and should finish soon after 5pm. The cars will be split into two groups for two qualifying heats each, then the top 26 cars will have three heats to decide the winner.
Ah yes - anyone else (WiseOwl?) remember the night that Big Bad Charlie in Brew 22 chased Ray New in the track jeep, leaving the jeep stranded on a drum? The man is a legend!
