Just wondering what the history is of the purple coupe 62H that was racing on Saturday night.
It was nice of the driver not to go hard out and win every race too as it looked like he could do.....
Gee , doesn't old Graham Mitchell go hard with the old 17 ...

The 62H historic started life as the 16A Bill Game car that made its debut at the NZ Champs in 1985. It is being built as a replica of the 62H Dayne Plummer car. Scotty still has a bit of work to do, but it will look great when finished with the headers and wing, plus the sign writing. Should really be metallic brown, but that is not a biggy, people remember the Plummer 88H purple cars with the 5 window bodies. And we are not racing, purely a spirited demonstration with a bit of close dicing to entertain the crowd. Track was very greasy for these relatively narrow tyred cars and I thought the guys put on a great show. And, yes Grandad Mitch has still got the skills.

It's the old "Iron fairy" . I went see that car when it was on a farm south of Ak many years ago. Was tempted at buying it but thought it was too much work. Raced against it in the 90's as 27A and then saw it on trademe a couple of years ago and was tempted again but have the Ex 10A coupe now to keep me busy.
62 H will definitely look better with the big wing on top!

It was never on trademe. I bought the car around 2002 after seeing it advertised in the Trade & Exchange. Scotty owns it now and he purchased it directly from me two years ago.

Good to see the Iron Fairys in good hands with Scotty. As a young fella it was my favourite car at the time. Didn,t Bill build it as a tribute to Ross [ Pink ] Dayne plummer [ 34 coupe ] & Sam Ferabend [ # 16 ] ?
I remember one race Bill lost the steering & used the wall to make his way around , on the last lap he got up a fair amount of speed & bounced heavily off the first pit gate put it back in gear , floored it & then bounced off the second gate straightening up for the front straight to finish the race, highly entertaining at the time. Ive got it on video some where. ;D

would be good to see that video,, spent many hours building that car with bill in a tiny workshop in sandringham starting off with plate steel, original body parts came from plummers but were a bit knackered it was built as a tribute car to the legends so it would be fitting to have it back that way, 5 window body and huge wing

Hi Rod
I will have dig out the video & will let you know.
I remember going down the pits at WP at the time to see if the body was steel ,it was mainly the remains of the roof & windows area if I remember rightly & Bill said he salvaged the remains from Dayne Plummers.
Although Scottys done a cool job as #62 it would be great to see the Pink 5 window again. ;D

Well, if some rich person were to donate a steel 5 window coupe body it could probably be arranged.
But, with the 3 window Chev body it makes a pretty good 62H replica.
The big wing is still around although it may be being cut down for the small version on 62H.

Already a member of the Historic Stock Car Club...... the car has been part of the club for years now although in different liveries. Last appeared at Palmerston North during the 75 Years Reunion painted black and white as number 50. Tribute to 50 years of stock car racing in New Zealand.
I originally got the car back in January 2000. The all steel 34 Chev coupe body was purchased from a dude by the name of Glen Moore down in Christchurch. I had it shipped up along with another similar body around mid 1998.
The original engine that I used was purchased from a guy out Henderson Valley way. He had used it in a spaceframe stockcar and was selling everything off. The engine eventually shook itself to death and was replaced with another 221 Ford V8.
The second engine which Scotty still runs in the car was purchased via trademe from a guy out Titirangi way whose father coincidentally raced stock cars during the 50s at the Epsom Showgrounds.
This engine had been pulled out of a dismantled T Bucket hot rod and sat for a few years till I bought it. Goes real good although the first engine revved a lot harder.
The car was always intened to be a replica of Dayne Plummers number 62 in that we had the correct body style to work with.
Its great to see Scotty has taken the car to the level it was always intended. I'm sure the wing will be forthcoming - expect to see a wing size more in keeping with the "62" car of the 70s.
You ain't ever gonna see it in pink!!

Here are a few photos of the Iron Fairy in its historic 62H work in progress stages. YankeeClipper10H had some fun in it. First time out at Dargaville: Waharoa: Waikaraka, 50th anniversary of first Western Springs stockcar meeting: Palmy 75th:

Thanks pallmall. Yep had a lot of fun in the car. That first time out at Dargaville was a bit of a bogey run as the whole electrical system had a melt down. I can recall driving along and all of a sudden there was smoke bellowing everywhere. Quickly drove infield and managed to switch everything off in time. I think you may have a photo loading the car onto the trransporter after the meeting Very cool car to drive. ;D

Nice pic Pall Mall. Enough to make a grown man shed a tear. Hopefully both cars will be at Waharoa on ANZAC day 2009.

The black and white NZ 50 was my favourite colour scheme. It seemed to suit the era of the car. The chequered paint pattern was also on the firewall. Took me ages to do one Christmas holiday. All done with cans of spray paint and masking tape.
