It was great to have a quick chat at Huntly with petrolfumes. I asked him if he would like to have a drive on Sunday at Meremere Dirt Track in the 'rookies' race.
It is common to get an eager response, but rare to actually get an attendence (ay Dreves?) from a hoon. This guy not only turned up, he signed up as a passenger, squeezed into a 2.0l turbo EX lancer (he is 6'5 !!) and had a ball.
Then I found him a Toyota Levin to drive that he fitted only just and the last race of the day he started from 7th position.
Off they go and from the rear comes a quick and calculated driver who slowly picked off faster cars in front of him with lesser skill to finish a brilliant 4th place and not a mark on the car. Much to the relief of owner Terry Goldsbro who saw his car rolled the last time he lent it out to a rookie ( a family member ) and who has sadly never been back.
Petrolfumes however, is well and truely up to the task, and able to do 2 more races before he is no longer classified a rookie. Not just a good film maker, a pretty good driver in the making as well.
Thanks for coming down, hope to see the footage from the lancer in-car soon.

As a former Smashfest 07 Driver adding to my CV, Yes my FBT Freind I am going to head south to meet with you next to the Highbanks and discover what all the fuss is about......
I understand that ol'dave enjoyed his time on the mic and perhaps may jump into the commentators box for a chat or two at WP.....
Now Mike...... Are you looking foward to all those talented Midgets and Minisprints this weekend.... Remember they are a non-contact class - YEAH RIGHT! ;D
The Drevz advice - As a supporter of Wendys both Drive through and Dine In Standring should Win!!!!!

Dave Shaw did an awesome job on Sunday and I look forward to seeing your good self measure up to his very high standards Mr Waikaraka Park. That Smashfest outing was a reasonable outing, but you took some convincing to finally go over the ramp and give poor old Percy's derby car some 'spirally' moments. When you finally do make it down to the 'breeding ground of champions', I will make sure you have a suitable car to show off your talent.
You are right that Petrolfumes was given the mic and told to commentate while I had a LOVELY COOL Powerade. He kept the words flowing but I think he got an appreciation of the difficulty of the job.
Looking forward to lots of titles up for grabs on Saturday night, should be a great night and I heard some competitors may be bringing some studded tyres in case the conditions deem necessary.
I am glad we started the Factual Broadcasting Team (FBT) when we were together at Waikaraka. I for one am glad we didn't call it the Factual Announcing Team instead, imagine those initials??
The Wendy's car will be fast, does Subway have a car on the track?
Wandering minds want to know, and yes that is my phrase matey !!

I hear what you are saying Richard.
Must be the vodka in those Minties that hype him up. Poor old Mal, he has put up with the old bloke for a while now, and I am the grasshopper, but a fun place to be.
Love to give broadcasting a go one day, done some TV post for the Pukekohe enduro's a couple of times, but easy when you can do it again and again. But hard to do in a studio.
Good on ya for giving it a go,
Mike.

Id love to get into Motorsport on television, thats a career goal.
I can talk to I guess at a conservative estimate 100,000 plus people when Im reading the news live, but when youre calling a race live at the track, there are no scripts, there are no prompts, there are, like you said no re records, its a completley different kettle of fish, and I loathe postings criticising commentator's, because I sure as hell would put money on it that they'd crash and burn afer a few races if not laps, its a dammn hard job to do.
Id like to give it ago again sometime in the future, kinda let Mintie down at Huntly, I think he and I both thought because of my radio background I'd be able to slot in pretty naturally, like Mr Hickey.
Some people have it and some dont, hats off to the likes of BB, Drever Sines and Mintie who I've had the pleasure pleasure working alongside or near in the past......watch this space maybe? Who knows!
Hats off to Dave too, a man who gives a lot too the sport for very little recognition, glad to hear he carved up some experienced racers, where do I apply? haha
