By now most properly already know about my up coming trip north, for what I consider to be the ultimate Speedway experience.
Those that followed my progress in the recent Interislander North V South series will be aware that the Speedway Gods were kind to me during the 4 day event and combined with careful, consistent racing somehow (while others fell by the way side) I managed to pop up on the podium, earning myself entry into the DHL Speed week.
Before I head off North I just want to take a moment to thank everybody that has offered financial assistance and give a wee insight into what it means to me to be offered this unbelievable opportunity. The enormous amount of support from an unbelievable number of people has been overwhelming to say the least.
This being my 17th year racing and with my new car sorted, it would be fair to say that I am driving with confidence and, although I have a wee bit left there to go, feel that I am pretty much at the peek of it all. However when I was selected for the South Island team the last thing on my mind was the individual points or the DHL series opening on offer. Even at Blenheim when Steve Williams explained how I had finished tied 2nd overall but then after a count back system was to be awarded 3rd, I recall my reply was something along the lines of “I’m just happy that I could drive my car back into the truck at the end of it. Anything else is a bonus”
Before I had even been handed the trophy and officially offered the spot into the DHL series the Taylor’s had offered their truck along with Fred and Nathan as pit crew.
Since then the support has been awesome and I truly thank each and everyone as I simply would not have been able to even consider such an event on my own. With personal life dramas chipping away behind the scenes, at times I was ready to pull the pin on it. Thankfully for others around me, that was never an option.
My boss asked me about it and as I tried to explain it to him, the reality finally hit home when I said “ It would be like playing rugby of Green Island club and then suddenly being selected for the All Blacks “
Once again to those that have helped – THANK YOU
To the members of Island Park Speedway – as I have always said, as a club we should take pride in our achievements.
Not only am I going North but now after a late with draw, Tony Williamson has been offered the last remaining spot and together we will be flying the Island Park flag high thru the central North Island. Check out the wed site www.dhlspeedweek.co.nz for full coverage and follow our adventure as we go.
I hope everyone has a safe and happy Xmas, and please don’t drink to much or drive to fast……..leave that to us
Cheers Mark
