Was thinking about what makes the Young Guns such a good team and thought I would give you my 10 cents worth on our current team personnel. Maybe some of you could do the for your local stockcar team.
Richard Gaskin: An astute driver and maintains his car in a way that it seems to always keep running no matter how much punishment it takes. Can run with the best of them but in my view excels as a blocker/hit-man. If he decides to take someone out can do so with regular success. His reputation as one of the nice guys of the sport is well and truly thrown out the window for the good of the team.
Dale Robertson: When he chooses to be, one of the best hit-men in the business. Great runner, has the ability to spin or knock aside blockers without losing his own momentum. His passion for competing means he will do whatever it takes to get the team to victory.
Darren Grey: Developing into one of the legends of the sport. His experience comes to the fore when the going gets tough. A patient runner with the wisdom to allow team mates to clear the way rather than the "bull at a gate" method so often employed by the less experienced.
Dave Marshall: I compare this great driver to Reuben Thorne in rugby, Mr Invisible. So decisive, has a knack for turning up at the right place at the right time and doing exactly the right thing. Can read a race brilliantly. Often does the unspectacular work for the team, therefore not always noticed, but to me would always be one of the first picks.
Kyle Lane: Might be the younger Young Gun, but has really come of age in the last couple of seasons. An excellent runner, seems to have an uncanny knack of knowing when he can keep his foot to the pedal and leave blockers behind him playing with the wall. Has proven he can block as well as any when required.
Paul Gaskin: After some time out has come back to form almost instantly. Brings a bit of mongrel to the team. Get in his firing line at your peril. Again a very multi-skilled driver. Showed his worth at the Palmy teams and will be a match winner at the NZs I'm sure.
Carl Spence: The 6th driver. Earned his team spot by stepping up and doing the job at Palmy. Has a great future, will certainly be one to keep an eye on.
Graham Gaskin: The brains trust and one worthy of esteem for the Young Guns sauces. Hugely respected in speedway circles and has earned every bit of it. No matter what another team comes up with we Te Marua faithful are confident the sharp Gaskin mind will be two steps ahead of them.
The teams greatest strength is that all have the ability to run or block and all can change role mid race as circumstances require. Also the technical abilities of the team members in the pits should not be under estimated either.
