I have touched on this breifly in the Open Wheel Thred but without upsetting anyone do you think that it is time for the NZ Dirt Track Magazine to sharpen the pencil on price for what they produce at the moment or do we pay a litttle bit more and they produce a decent publication like the Dirt or even NZ racer (which is free.....)
Some clubs programs have better formats and graphics than what we get in NZ Dirttrack I guess what I am saying is that we need to go away from a newspaper style and more magazine style its nearly 2009 we need to revamp this as it has sensational content etc and is not promoted as the whole image is dated.
Feedback, debate, comments please......

i think this has been covered before..
i think its great as it is.. its always on hand to soak up oil... i think glossy style mags arent worth the $$$,its just gloss. and it wont soak oil...
id like to see more driver profiles in there, not just the big hitters, but drivers moving up the ranks, newbies etc.. some how to's would be good to...

I like it the way it is.. Fits perfectly beside the dunny for an uninterupted read.. I think the old saying prevails here "if it aint broke, dont fix it!!" Thats just my opinion of course.

Leave it the way it is. If you want to read a glossy mag go buy a Woman's Weekly.
Why fix something that isn't broken? The staff involved in the Dirt track do a fantastic job and maybe you should approach them with your ideas first before asking for a debate, discussion on here.
If I saw this thread and I was involved in the publication I would be a bit pi##ed cause you didn't approach me first.
That's my thoughts.

I'm quite happy with it the way it is. I like the content and we have a few idea's of article that might be a bit different to submit for publication. Don't like the glossy style, but then I am the sort that would read a newspaper but not a glossy magazine. Therefore Dirt Track suits me just fine.

[/glow] Yeah I have your copies here too Cheque Book. Like I said I was mearly asking the question. I understand that the dirt track team do a good job but I was asking why wouldn't it hurt to investigate what other publications are doing.

Investigation and research never hurt, but I do think unless circulation is dropping, their is no need to look to long and hard.

This was covered in the last off season, don't know why you have brought it up again but the overwhelming concensus was that it is just fine as it is

Why fix something that isn't broken?
Imagine if Rutherford, the Wright brothers or Henry Ford took that line. If I lived by that Id probably still be married to my 2nd wife.
Ive got some practical suggestion's, page 3 girl for a start, and a page 4 guy for the girls (& some of the guys as well). Billy Neil in budgie smugglers, hell me Arron & Cheque book in budgie smugglers on page 4
I think NZDT does a good job to, but that shouldn't stop constant improvement. I find the lay out hard to read, I reckon take the font up 1 size , change to a book-man font. Lay it out like a newspaper , by that I mean narrower paragraphs, and wammo big leap forward in readability, compare it to the Herald on Sunday and you'll see what I mean.
I think a couple of the writers may have used some dodgy pharmaceuticals as inspiration on occasion in the past , but thats only my opinion.

I personally think it is a boring publication.
As said last year, Speedsport magazine is a shadow of itself from 14-15 years ago. Dirt Track mag is pretty much the same. The sport is forever changing, why not the supposed leading magazine?
Wandering minds would certainly love to know.
Hooncorp.

I started a poll about this type of thing long time ago and found most liked as it is.
Personally I have nearly every mag since 1992, and yip they haven't changed that much with the times.
I also have a bigger collection of speedsports which as hooncorp pointed out they have changed a lot.
I guess it all depends on the sales, if they are up/even then I wouldn't be making any major changes. But it does seam that they just go month to month with out any hint of change.
Interesting to see that the speedsport also does a bit on speedway each month, is this the start of a bit a competition???

The Dirt speedway magazine............ 112 full cover pages for only $10.00 and with interesting articles .
NZDTR magazine 12 pages ?? for I think $5.90. Haven't bought one in years and only have a free read at the newstands and put it back on the shelf.

NZDTR is no different from the publication I work for or any other that sits on the racks in the supermarkets and bookstores.
If you stand still, you fall backwards.
It needs to examine content (US circuit racing? 2000 words from a tiny club meeting?) and the layout is just horrendous.
But it serves a purpose by providing coverage of a sport we love.
The newspaper format works fine and I have no quibbles about the cost but any prudent business should ask itself ...Are we giving the punters what THEY want or what we think they want?

What is the point in changing something that works? If you try & go to the glossy flash magazine style, the cost will through the roof. More advertisers are going to be needed which in turn makes the mag one big advert with no actual Speedway coverage. This has happened to many magazines before, when they went with all the pretty presentation, the purchase price went up & all you got was a book of adds. Yippeee..................

two vary relevant questions come from this, what is the owners objective for NZDT, is it intended to be run as a business, or is that our assumption.
I think it might be a bit like Magors, very satisfying for the owner at a personal level, meets a need, but probably wont launch them into Kerry Packer status, which may not be the intent any way.
But yes I reckon a reinvention of the NZDT product wouldn't do it any harm.

I question marked the 12 pages as I wasn't sure how many pages it actually was.
