That lifts the image of speedway to where the public perceive it to be. Lighten up pallmall or are you suggesting the "public" perceive us speedway folk as people who lie around in the sun

Not trying to be too harsh, but having spent a good part of the day trying to sell speedway to a couple of corporate non-believers who have only ever been to one Demo Derby, that speedway is actually a main stream sport with a great family following, etc., in the hopes of getting some event sponsorship from them. And then to see that photo, I suddenly thought that maybe they had been correct in their opinions.

That lifts the image of speedway to where the public perceive it to be. Having been at the track the image sums up Cromwell Speedway and the people who frequent it quite nicely. For the benefit of those who weren't there the event was marred by fighting as the 1,2,3 nz were being awarded by several drunken patrons. The fighting spilled over 4 or 5 times before I left and at one stage contact was made with a patrons Holden. We can now add Cromwell to the list of speedways with alcohol related incidents. Waikaraka Park, Palmy, Kihikihi - it's a growing list which in no way supports the sports (supposed) image as a family orientated event. The scenes brought back memories of the fighting at the Kihikihi Demo Derby a few seasons ago. The Cromwell promotion does nothing to regulate alcohol intake and then when things boil over they don't have a plan to deal with it. Security were hopeless all weekend, couldn't be bothered getting fans back from the fence let alone breaking up a fight. The response from the Cromwell team to the fighting was two security personel and two firefighters. They quickly realised they could do nothing and pretty much let things be. The fighting was the worst I've seen at a speedway track. It was worse than Kihikihi. Cromwell Speedway is the last place I would recommend for family entertainment in the area. The place had more drunks than an Auckland nightclub. The team at Cromwell need to have a serious think about the patrons they wish to attract and what they need to do to go about attracting them. Sometimes the lack of media coverage is a good thing for a sport, this event was one of those instances.

maybe you should just stay in the nth island percy.you never seem to have anything good to say about any track makes me wonder why you even go to speedway.i attended cromwell over christmas and new years with my family and others and we all enjoyed the family atmosphere.i would recommend cromwell speedway to anybody looking for good family entertainment.it was probably some of your fellow pig islanders doing the fighting anyway ;D

I was in the pits by the time the presentations happened, so did not see the incident to which Percy refers, but the drunks were certainly an issue to a few people over the course of the weekend. Drugs being openly smoked too. I haven't commented on this before, but if people want to try and defend things that actually did take place, then they must expect a few more home truths to emerge as well. Viewing was certainly disrupted by some of these people, standing up and staggering around, and who once they've had a few don't really care about those sitting behind them. Some aren't exactly approachable either. It is NOT what we want to promote our sport around. From what I witnessed personally, I support Percy's comments.

I think I would have to agree with both BB & Percy re the alcohol problem. In my earlier post I tried not to focuss on the negative side of things rather simply comment on the event as a whole.
Maybe the average speedway supporter/follower needs to have a drink. I know personally I can take it or leave it.
At the end of the day the public perseption is what counts more than some people would like think. ...fool them

I have been to numerous tracks around the country both racing and as a spectator and have been pretty amazed that at most north island tracks i have at some stage incounted bad behaviour from the public in the form of drinking and or drugs/fighting.I cant see many tracks being able to police this entirerly without a major gate price hike to cover extra security, but then you would moan how the price is too dear then. All sports events including speedway will have a small portion of bad people ie cricket,rugby,v8 supercars, drag racing BINGO in where i have seen people not being able to be contained.I have been involved in events for many years at cromwell and other tracks and find this type of thing only to happen very occassionly and usually by visiting out of town patrons who cant behave themselves.Whats the answer 25 army like security to kill the mood?I must say percys comments after numerous days on from the event are some of the first negitive comments but are in keeping with his usual bagging of most tracks that arnt on the favourite list.Well done phil and team,i can see the humour in the photo without reading more into thingsWhich tracks gonna get verbially bashed next?Roll on NZ Sprintcars, another quaility event bought to you by the best little speedway in NZ.Freedoom of speech or will it be deleted.

The only discussion points people tend to focus on are my negative comments. You will find on my website that I am currently posting thoughts on my experiences. Cromwell is still to come but my comments on Woodford Glen (the only other S.I track I've been to) are on the whole very positive. Like chappy I too tried not to focus on the negative. I could have started a negative thread about the fighting in the crowd but I chose not to. But to see the club promoter come on here and post the image when alcohol related fighting has occured at his track is not on in my opinion. Hence why I have shared my experience of the NZ Super Saloon Champs. When I write on my website about the Cromwell track it will have both positives and negatives. On the positive I think they have an awesome race track, good track preparation, a hilarious commentary team and a venue with potential but I don't shy away from pointing out the negatives either. Out of all this I hope the Cromwell promotion can come up with some solutions to the problems identified. If they can it will benefit not only their track but also the sport as a whole. And yes I do enjoy speedway from time to time

Thats your opinion percy and it just as we all expect it to be,sprinkled with a negitive tinge.Phils photos are of the 1nz crew relaxing on the front verge of a lawn in the sun and i dont think anyone would hold them in a bad way in cromwell as theres no booze or likes present in this shot just people kickin back.Hope Shane see your comments regarding the pic and sets you straight.Just my opinion though percy.

I must say percys comments after numerous days on from the event are some of the first negitive comments but are in keeping with his usual bagging of most tracks that arnt on the favourite list. I think most people thought Cromwell did much better than expected by many (I was certainly one), and thus did accentuate only the positives in their reports on here, but that's not to say there wasn't the odd low point as well. One of those very few picked up on will feature in the NZDTR review of the meeting (out late next week), not a biggie in the eyes of most fans but something I hope I never see again anyway. Cromwell, you did well, I suspect most of the troublemakers weren't local residents, but I'd bet dollars to donuts they weren't NI fans either. With a little extra crowd control, perhaps a roped off alcohol area or seperate alcohol free zone, don't let so many cars park down low when you get a bumper crowd in, one has to sit so high to see over them which leads to congestion in some areas but empty non-viewable areas in other places, and keep the fans from standing up against the saftey fence and you'll have one of the better spectator arenas in the country. You have the facility, it just needs to be better controlled when there's a huge crowd in.

Regards Your Drinking Mate Phil Promoter We have had a large thread on here about wanting speedway to be a major TV sport, if speedway wants to be as mainstream as some people think it should be the image has to be cleaner from within. But I have nothing against people celebrating a great victory, it was well deserved. Lets move on.
