...and started roaring down the backstraight? What economic crisis? seems to me that things at Ruapuna are looking brighter than ever with the crowds starting to flock back to Christchurch's spiritual home of speedway - Ruapuna! This season to be totally honest hasnt boasted the "BIG" meetings and (international) guests like seasons past - yet crowd sizes are looking up on previous years - great to see! it's got to the stage now where you dont feel the need to take a cardboard cut-out into the complex to make the place feel attended Competitor numbers are up and consistant (just the occasional blip on the radar) - no longer do we have to go and sit through a certain classes "Feature" event with only 3-4 cars on the track, and the racing itself - well surely some of the best seen in many years with no-one being a shoe-in to take line honours! Got to make it exciting for the spectator? And lets not forget theres still the usual spectacular thrills and spills that only openwheel racing can supply..... Meetings run comparibly smoothly compared with some past seasons - Jeez I even thought for a moment last night the meeting would be over before the scheduled 9.30pm start time for the fireworks display..... The track itself has been relatively good for competitors - again there has been the odd blip - but that happens everywhere! (and I mean everywhere - you cannot deny that) Is it simply the fact of "less (meetings) is more" for Ruapuna? What are peoples oppinions/ideas for this turn around? Great to see open-wheel speedway getting back on the map in Christchurch....big ups to all involved! Sdemon

Ruapuna is certainly my favourite track for watching sprintcar and midget racing.
Wish the track at Western Springs was 1/2 as good.

yeah chris was a great turn out last night and has been fairly good most nights crowd wise. Increased competitor numbers cant hurt. For instance the worst sprintcar turnout we have had is 7 cars, was a time not long ago when that would have been an awesome number of sprinters for ruapuna! Racing in all classes has been real entertaining so heres hoping people keep coming back

Sdemon ,,, by this comment, have ruapuna cut down on the number of meetings, like the springs. ? Ruapuna had/has 10 scheduled meetings for this season, so yes they have cut back from years gone by......but in this case it seems to be working well for both the Christchurch Speedway Association and it's competitors.....takes a bit of getting used to sitting at home on a Saturday night when Ruapuna's not running though Sdemon

Don't under estimate Ruapuna's ability to shot themselves in the foot at any moment

thank you SWP..another thread that looked like it was being hijacked by 'way off the topic' stuff.
Mod46-interesting response. and not one I totally disagree with, however there is some stability in the committee, and thats very important. Was that Woodford Glens President in a stockcar refereeing a derby the other night while across town his track was racing on the same night? hmmmmmmmmm.
I have attended meetings at 4 South Island tracks and 2 up North this year, and have to say that I think Ruapuna and its members will be relatively happy with their current progress. The show appears to be run a lot slicker than in the past, good sized fields, and a good night out. The meetings are finishing a lot earlier too
Of course all tracks reputations are easily blown quickly....

We only got to race there twice last season, was hoping to come down this season aswell! Great facilities & people down there, I was amazed at the turn around time between classes going out on track.

Oh, we were also asked of we could provide some cars as the class was stood down that night. Got to keep those inter-track relationships going.... Personally I was impressed with the flow of the meeting, a far cry from 3 years ago.

Pity Ruapuna didnt add the stockcars into the programme for a few "races" - I'm sure the guys (maybe would have attracted more) would have enjoyed the wide open track-space to let themselves go on! careful, Kihikihi started running stockcars and it ruined the place.
