I was really looking forward to this event until I saw the format. 20 cars 3 X 15 laps. Highest points wins the NZ1. This format has a well proven record of a smash fest. Totally unfair due to half the field gifted one point automatically. Totally unfair due to cars behind the crash gifted points for passing no one. Totally unfair to expect 20 cars to gain places in 15 laps when the format in itself forces drivers to make desperate moves with dire results. (Recent example GP in Auckland) Used to be, using this outdated format one lap per car.So if this format was to be used at least 3 X 20 Laps. 3 X 15 format is what is used on a normal club night. Hardly much imagination involved using this for a Major Title. I'm not saying that a one race final is better but at least you know who wins when the first car crosses the line, as against having to wait for HOURS after the meeting has concluded to wait for a NZ 1,2,3. There will always be negatives and positives in all formats some formats will suit some better than others, but what format is decided has to be a level playing field for all competitors, and also an entertaining spectacle for the spectators whom travel to see exciting racing ,and do not get a thrill about seeing some great drivers present but unable to compete through no fault of their own with wrecked race cars.

I hear what your saying and hope the predicted smash fest does not occur. Must admit that the times we have seen the class at Meeanee this season the track has provided a good wide lane that allowed for clean passing with plenty of room.

I certainly agree the heats should be 20 laps each. 15 laps is ridiculous and just inviting trouble.

One lap per car has always been the rule of thumb......should perhaps actually be a rule of book?
But only IF they decide to run 3 heats. 3 heats should really not be their first option.

Thanks Trev.
Gutted BUT saved us a few hundred bucks. Jimmyj is right in that whatever format is chosen, someone may express distain ...
But Trevor is NOT just someone. Trevor is our Sports 'FIRST' saloon (super by todays branding) champion back in the early 70's. Trevor has promoter experience AND more spectator experience than the vast majority, attending all major events throughout NZ.

Didn't the same thing happen at Waikaraka a few years ago, NZ Super Saloons was down for 3 x 15 lap finals, think it got changed to 3 x 20 at the last minute - or am I remembering it wrongly?

disappointing ,especially when you consider that meanee just had the saloon G.P. which was a two heat to decide grids ,then a 25 lap final which ran green to checkers with no yellows. why they go back to this stockcar format??? that is a proven car wrecker ?

18th Season as Meeanee Track Announcer 3 X 20 laps would be better although I prefer the first over the line Final as a Commentator as it clearly defines a winner. Meeanee has been an excellent 2 lane track this season with some stunning Saloon racing and should be again for this event so to those debating whether to attend I suggest you do so.

3x 15 lap heats on a non championship night is fair. However for a nz title contested over 3 heats it must be 20 at least in my opinion. It will still be a great meeting to be at. The Flynn's will be hard to beat at their home track but their are a handful of drivers who will run them close

You and TRex will be able to hold hands and celebrate together. I for one would not be surprised if he does win, but then there are at least a dozen other that I would consider top contenders as well. Bring on the weekend (champs) LOL

Wasn't there a thread on here in about the last month about the format of a title meeting. I think in the week leading up to the event, the format was changed.
Or could it have been the groups.

With the format the way it is, thrown in with some loose canon drivers those on the podium will be those who drive with the brain and not those who must win by turn's 1 & 2 and as we know the stars must also align for you the whole night. I personally think it will be a tragic rerun of the GP, therefore not a good showing of the premier class. With luck SNZ and the promoter may of learnt something from this tragic event. Also please don't water the track heavy before ea race, this is also the cause of many turn 1 & 2 pile ups.
