do you remember why it failed last time? as cool as it was, it did not draw big enough crowds to keep going, i dont think any track that far south of auckland will pull regular crowds like Western Springs, or a well run and promoted waikaraka park will, Road are better these days, Oh Auckland to Meremere 3hrs When the promotion from CTRA to wont name others it went down hill : The easter ctra meeting had a great mix of class's Last event ( International midgets had 7 in the feature )

Meremere at the moment have got everything but a highbank Speedway which is a shame, dragstrip, off roading track, drifting track, dirt track and the vintage Speedway track and Hampton Downs just down the road, wouldn't have to worry about house owners either.

In an article in NZ Herald , Motorsport section 11/4/18 by Paul Nisbet Sun Is About To Set On Speedway At Springs. This is a very through article on the subject of Western Springs future. One of the outstanding paragraphs Venue hire agreement signed in 2013 by SPL included NO right of renewal. That gave them 6 yrs to find an alternative venue. SPL lease only pays 25 percent of actual venue cost, rest paid by ratepayers.

The article fails to acknowledge that SPL is not the only user of Western Springs and trys to lay blame on them only paying 25 percent of the venue costs. My understanding is that apart from the 12 days that SPL uses Western Springs, the venue is available for use by others. Therefore the costs associated with the venue can be (and quite possibly already are) shared by other users.
It is my understanding the SPL were given an undertaking by Council, that a suitable alternative venue would be found for them, not that SPL had to find an alternative venue.
The NZ Herald article also fails to address how many millions of ratepayers dollars will be spent on 1. The redevelopment of Waikaraka Park 2. The redevelopment of Western Springs to turn it in to a cricket venue, for one or two games per year.
As a ratepayer, I am far more interested in the actual cost of redeveloping the venue, than I am on the measly $500,000 that they use to upkeep the venue.

if they are spending $596000 per year on up keep at Western Springs someone is ripping them off because there is little to show for it.
I bet a large portion of that bill is rates paid to the council, oh yeah that is them.

I also wonder over how long they've been spending that amount, and how much the culling of trees and the new terracing on the hill has contributed, or inflated the cost.

What I fail to understand, if cost is their driver, how they expect to get a greater return or utilisation from the venue with test cricket. Will it attract over 100,000 people each year? Will the financial contribution be greater? With day/night tests in the offer now, it's not like they can cut costs from the venue with things like removing lighting etc either.

well pretty sure it wont be cricket. Was only one test match in Auckland this year, and probably same or even less in the future. Read a Guardian article on test cricket recently, and in NZ's case, and most other countries, they lose approx US$500,000 on each test match played. That's a per game thing, though it's offset by the huge amount of revenue they get from TV money, mainly out of India and Pakistan.

Goff will be thinking hard if 1oo,ooo people didnt vote for him again, or labour candidates that could swing the scales back to national and cause a fly or two in the ointment ..

I read it was 44 events per year for the stadium- if what they say is true costs Auckland ratepayers $400,000 maintain western springs what events would put in sustain this amount.. just figure brought up out of thin air. if western springs speedway costs $150,000 lease stadium for 12 race meetings and one practice day- surely given more meetings mean more money not less.. how on earth going come up that amount if speedway no longer.

44 events is pie in the sky talk, more so as the RFA don't even know what those events would be.
In terms of concert event you have to understand how the touring side of the industry works.
There are only a hand full of artists that can do full world studuim tours ie the production accompanies the artists around the world.
Some bands have 2 stages and 2 sets of gear that travel in advance to the next city.
These bands are the likes of Gun N Roses, AC/DC, U2, Foofighters etc.
These Artists will tour the world for 2 years, then have a break for 2 years from touring.
Most artists do arena tours (indoors) in the US then continue doing indoor venues around the world.
This is relevant to the idea the springs can be a cricket and concert veune.
The two can not operate together.
There is no way NZ cricket is going to move there Schudule around to suit a band or promoter nor will they want the ground to be damaged due to staging etc.
It makes no sense to me.
