A lot of people not normally attending western springs showed up for their support , a lot of them dissapointed with no fireworks display and no mention of this during the meeting and still charged a premier meeting price We received a lot of feedback on the Western Springs facebook page and it was overwhelmingly positive. There were one or two objectors regarding the cancellation of the fireworks display. However most were understanding of the council decision and accepted that it was too late in the piece to change pricing. The buzz after the show and feedback received indicates not many were disappointed by the fireworks cancellation and/or meeting puricing. Half an hour after the show Michael Pickens was still taking photos and having kids sit in his car such was the queue at his pit. All well and good but SPL have alot to learn and unfortunately these comments are smoke and mirrors. I personally have been waiting for the PR campaign to start but unfortunately I hold very little hope for that. Use your contacts at SPL to pass on this free advice. Mission statement - To educate non speedway people on what is speedway, its history (at the springs), drivers involved past and present, the character's ie Barry Butterworh etc, overseas drivers that have visited ie Kyle Larsen, Stan Fox, Sleppy Trip etc and more importantly the family friendly environment on Saturday nights when attending speedway. * Replace the current website homepage with a new home page titled The Past, Present and the Future!!. Add a clock counting down over the next 12 months. Add a link to updated information on plans and to communicate directly with the fans and your supporters. Add a mailing list for people to receive regular updates via email or txt. Be open and honest with the people that supported you. Don't tell the drivers, car owners and sponsors one thing, and keep that to yourselfs. Let us know!. * Find a spokes person to represent SPL in the public domain * Create a pop up road show to ereact in shopping centres, schools or at public events - Don't just chuck a midget on display. Use interactive and media tools like video screens and pictures to tell the story of speedway and its people. * A full multimedia campaign targeting all markets print, tv and social media targeting cross sections of age and social demographics * Highlight the generations of families and people that have attended speedway over the decades - Tell their stories * Find non motorsports personalities to endorse speedway ie actors, musicians, media personalities etc SPL got the people to speak, let's hope these people were not used for SPLs convenience. It's up to you SPL to put the hard work in yourselfs as you are the promotors and the ones who benefit financially.

I think SPL missed an opportunity on Saturday night. The least they could have done was to donate $2 or $5 from the cancelled fireworks from every sale to what happened on Friday. Even a helmet collection might have been appropriate.
Another note As at today the petition is sitting at 35,000 plus. It’s titled Keep western springs speedway open. Does not mean keep SPL pushing for another track. Whatever happens tender should go out.
Percy can you tell us did SPL offer season passes to council and key media to attend? Not as a bribe but to show them what actually happens and what the place brings to the community before they vote on the places future.

Don't know sorry though given the coverage (or lack thereof) if any media passes were given they weren't used

Yes I think SPL missed the boat on Saturday - have seen the helmet go out for circumstances far less deserving than Christchurch's tragedy
Always thought that passes issued to media people would be a great way to get the sport in the public eye for possibly very little investment on SPL's behalf, when comparing the cost of Radio
& print advertising a few tickets in the corporate box would be an inexpensive way to get a bit of advertising for minimal investment

And a pass given to somebody who doesn't use it doesn't actually cost the promotion anything. They weren't going anyway.
You'd have to use a pass made out to that particular person though, so they don't just pass (excuse the pun) it on to somebody else they know that does attend regularly. Can't be that difficult.

Let's hope SPL are all over a self-inflicted piece of political leverage. Common sense tells you under the circumstances a professional, competent administrator would decline to comment given a person is fighting for their life and what affect those comments may have on the family. In any other professional area, comments as those made would see you no longer employed due to making insensitive comments at the wrong time.
SPL, have at it.

Any chance you might run for mayor? Somebody needs to point this stuff out to them...
