yet we have the great teams weekend, where hitting is ok, the rest of the time is follow the leader, unless its the wrong car in the lead, then it is moved out the way to allow one of the chosen few that seen to glide through the field untouched with ease, contact class, that means you contact other cars, not smash them just a gentle push like Shane Penn used to do,the bumpers are there so when the get out of shape and hit the wall it doesnt cost them $1000 to fix their cars like the non contact classes Why don't you move across to the Open wheel board & go watch those classes. The top guys are using a huge amount of bumper moving guys aside or pushing them deeper into the corner off the race line etc at ever increasing speeds. There were some big hits over the weekend just ask Quinn Ryan...clearly not enough for you so perhaps you should of stayed to spectate the T20 cricket. Congratulations to all involved...the Club, the fans & most of all the drivers, crews and their families for continuing to provide us the fans entertainment for $30-$40.

Its not about the big hits, you miss the point, its a contact class so why play in a contact class if you only flag race, put it in a way you might understand, if the all blacks went out for a game and instead of playing hard rugby with scrums a malls the only played touch rules and there was no tackles or rolling malls they only played soft rugby, except for the world cup the general rugby fans would be ok with that and say its OSH and the game is evolving, they have a game for non contact players its called touch rugby

You might recall a send off in the World Cup Final

Maybe change your logon to sad sack? The sport has evolved. Government rules and regulations have forced it to evolve as much as anything else. Life has evolved. We're just lucky that despite OSH and all the other things speedway has to comply with in the 2000's that we still have a sport, Superstocks particularly, to enjoy. Well that's how I look at it anyway. Gone are the days of old dungers running 30 second laps in the mud around 44-gallon drums. And Figure-8 racing for that matter. Barry B Congrats to Asher again, what a driver! A shame so many cars were pulled off for a flat tyre, especially for some drivers who would have been willing to attempt to slow asher down. I hope something gets changed around this ruling as it is greatly impacting the eventfulness of stockcar racing, at least from my perspective. It's making me think twice about hitting the road for events and which streams I bother shelling out for. If things keep changing the way they are, this won't last long, and they will become saloons with bumpers. Any chance you could throw some recent examples my way? I'm kinda out of the loop on that front. I get there's work happening behind the scenes at Speedway NZ, but it feels like we could push back a bit more on some of these rules. Other events and sports seem to get away with a lot. Is it just a money thing, or is there more to it? What happened to Stephen Penn doesn't give you much to push back with. Speedway needs to start collecting data of its value to local economies if it wants to have anything to fight back with. Look at how many people outside the area travel to big events. Let's us do our thing. And everybody wins. One practice they need to address is camping on speedway grounds. I feel this needs to stop except for palmy teams where the dollar value is known. You also quoted one in your intro. The flat Tyre rulenis a ost thing. So you are up with the play more than you realize. The sport needs to make changes. It has to. Just cha going the wrong thing atm

But when seeking advice from Lawyers, Worksafe and others the rule was brought back in probably to Stay. If you could trust drivers to slow down then maybe you could get rid of it, but it only takes 1 driver to break that rule and you are back to what we have

Rightyo a bit of a summation post
The weather didn't play it's part but the Meeanee promotion did well given the hand they were dealt. Getting the track together on night 2 always seemed a forlorn task but they gave it everything, leading to a mega one day title. You'd think these one dayers with two meetings would be impossible but we've seen with both teams racing and now individual racing that whilst not ideal, they do produce a good day at the speedway. Perhaps the turnaround between the two meetings could have been a touch shorter by also understand the logistics of emptying the venue and getting everything sorted was not simple.
The finals night schedule was absolutely the way to go. These title meetings always take longer than you think and scheduling a light program is the tested and proven method. Streetstocks added something to the show and the first TQ heat was pretty good as well. Kudos to the drivers in third tier who went out and raced when they didn't have to.
Incredibly two of the three podium getters did not qualify in the top 3 of their group!! Both Rees and Uhlenberg were the 4th qualifiers from their group by my points. Shows how competitive the class is. Once the field gets strung out there is precious little movement these days, you've got to advance positions in the first three laps and those drivers who put themselves in the right position get rewarded.
Nothing wrong with the level of action which included a couple of solid shots in the non-qualifiers. Great to see nothing approaching an over-aggressive attack and if the referee went through over-aggressive attacking in the drivers briefing I commend them. Not much in the way of controversy. The Jack Miers decision was straightforward, the reaction from some in the speedway community the usual anti-SNZ nonsense. Some in this sport seem to year for personal responsibility in health and safety until the sport implements personal responsibility for health & safety in which case it's seemingly SNZ's fault that competitor used a non-certified device. Must be said the otherwise very good commentary did not assist the response and would have been a great time to explain the rule and the fixed penalty that was applied.
Another area for improvement is social media presence during the event. For a great example of how to do it keep an eye out on the chili bowl over the next week and see how they do it. We were all left guessing and working out points ourselves. Should not happen in 2024 yet pretty much all our tracks do it.
I think the promotion should be happy with the crowd given the rain would have seen some head home early. Probably took the icing off the proverbial cake and made the whole situation easier to deal with. Hopefully it was financially worthwhile and the can re-invest into the venue.
I think overall a successful weekend and whilst I get the angst about the now 3x 1nz not being targeted despite behind a million points ahead, lets also recognise we are seeing something that we are unlikely to ever witness again.
A positive event for the club, the class and the sport.

Maybe I'm more annoyed at how this is policed by Speedway NZ as a lot of it just doesn't make any sense. E.g if your in block mode and not flinging up dirt, why be pulled off? From what I understand from last years NZ stockcar champs, some drivers were even DQ'd AFTER the race had finished for a flat tyre. No point in that if the rule was to stop drivings flinging up dirt during the race. Also disqualifying Miers after all the info was made available via his post seemed like an odd call. It's like context is completely ignored. /endrant

I have read that a lot over the years. Speedway is entertainment. Fans pay to attend. For some it wasn't entertaining. They are disappointed and this forum is the main place to vent their disappointment. I didn't have to buy a car and hit the track to up the enjoyment factor. For many years I only watched the stockcar class. But in the end i found something else and became a fan of that. Yeah I hear ya but IMHO ppl need to attend/watch with realistic expectations of what the sport has become. Rightly or wrongly superstocks go blimmin fast these days and that comes with consequences when someone decides to go on the attack. If your only going on the attack to stop someone winning, that just means someone else will win and ppl will moan that person didn't get taken out. These guys (Rees) are bloody good at what they do and what goes around comes around 10fold. My biggest problem is ppl who for any number of reasons can't/won't put their health and resources on the line, yet demand it of others because they paid their 30-40 dollars at the gate. I guess ppl just need to temper their expectations. What was 30 years ago isn't what today is. I know this will be an unpopular opinion but I have seen the consequences of "entertaining" super/stockcar racing and they are not good All day racing in the heat and into the night was always going to tone things down , the flat tyre rule also makes hitting problematic now

Greetings from "The Barn"
I dont post on here very often, but I have been forced to get off my perch and put my 2 cents in. I think it is time for some of the never-raced keyboard racers to consider the following facts.
To WIN a Superstock Title 1NZ in one year a driver has to :- 1. Get through 3 heats, maybe a repercharge, then 3 races in the finals. 2. He must have NO DNFs in all these races..sometimes not even a flat tire. 3. He must withstand any other driver finishing him off.. or just being unintentionally involved in an incident 4. That could be 7 races to win the title.
So... For Asher Rees to win 3 years in a row, that means he :- 1. Has finished a minimum of 18 races across the line 2. No DNFs 3. No engine failures
So folks.. What amazing statistics he has achieved whether you like the way he has done it or not.
So instead of moaning on here..Ra Ra Ra...get off your butts and have a go yourselves...get on the track. Ive been there.. trust me its not easy.. Try it !!
You should all be in awe of such an amazing feat
Cheers Wiseowl

The sport tries to keep ahead of things with rule changes, as the last thing speedway needs is, well, a bunch of people that don't understand things looking too closely. Many years at recent SNZ AGM's there have been speakers to the members about health and safety changes. Over the years there have been many changes to safety requirements, including minimum standard and expiry dates, on things like seats, belts, helmets, head and neck restraints, roll cages etc etc. then add in the over aggressive attacking rule and the right hand flat tyre rule [aimed at spectator protection, how one poster thinks it's a cost thing I'm unsure], as well as the minimum safety fence height requirement of a few years ago. Others will be able to add more, but that's just a few off the top of my head [with a memory not as it once was]. Barry B

The flat tyre rule came in following multiple crowd strikes at multiple tracks across the country. When such an occurrence happens you can no longer bury your head in the sand when you can make a rule to mitigate the problem. At the last Waikaraka meeting I attended a Stockcar popped a tyre in cemetery bend and credit to the driver retired to the infield once they were aware. Regardless, the amount and size of dirt clumps that was flung into the crowd was frightening. The whole notion of cars going slowly with flats was widely discussed at the AGM when the flat tyre rule initially came in. The officials can't officiate it and how slow is slow enough? The reason it's allowed in teams racing is because there are 8 cars on track and officials can officiate with the lower car count.

Where do you draw the line for how slow block cars have to go, what if block car speeds up to get a faster car? As for Jack Miers did he go out on the track with an expired Head and Neck restraint... YES Did he declare to Officials at the beginning of the meeting his safety equipment met the SNZ rules....YES So rules were broken. Rules now have a fixed penalty attached which in this case is DQ from meeting.

The reason it's allowed in teams racing is because there are 8 cars on track and officials can officiate with the lower car count. Well it certainly could use some refinement, because it is having a massive impact on the sport. The way it is currently implemented seems like a bit of a knee jerk reaction. It should be pretty obvious when a car is flinging up too much dirt, and we have 1 way radios to call people off if it's too much. Does the flat tyre rule also apply in run offs with just 2 cars? People still get hit with dirt from cars without flat tyres, so surely something like a finer mesh fence at tracks would be a better solution. If that has already been discussed, why was it rejected? Racing has been like this for a very long time. Cars racing on dirt, there's only so much you can do. Hopefully a better solution can be achieved that keeps the racing fun and exciting.

The issue with r/ flat tyres is one flat tyre and your out of the running, Is there a limit on the number of tyres you can use in a night ? Was wondering if you have 4 heats and you have to throw out your worst result ? At least you still have a chance maybe some other ideas out there ?

reading some of the comments here remind me of the same sort of comments(probably from the same sort of sideline experts), about modern pro rugby. its gone soft, the old days had harder hits etc. absolute nonsense when you take rose tinted emotion out and put physics in. the speed of modern superstocks is like the speed of modern pro rugby players, far in excess off the "good old days". having watched stockcars for 60 yrs, I think that the "good old days" often werent that good. slow old dungers lurching around at 30-40 mph, nudging each other and falling to bits with a decent hit. modern kiwi superstock racing is amazing , and only available in New Zealand thanks to A.c.c.. overseas, private medical insurance would NOT allow it. so, enjoy it, before someone sells off a.c.c. and it dissappears.either that, or smoke more ciggas so the nats can afford their tax cuts.
