To get maximum room in the cockpit and for ease of building the cage it was really the only option. Looking at being ready around christmas time. Hopefully a bit sooner.

Update: I made some wheels the other day with the correct offset so that I could make the bumper to chassis braces. These are now done and welded to the car. I have also put a cross between the chassis rails where the floor will go for a bit of extra strength and have welded in the diamond at the back of the car as well. After a little bit more welding with the car this way up I will be able to turn it upside down for welding, then on to each side and then back the right way up. Hopefully by the time I have done all that the seat and body will be here. Fingers crossed. I went up to Murray Gordges the other day and had a look at his new steering boxes. They are very expensive but I have made the decision to use one of these. The three factors that persuaded me to go this way were: -Easy to set up. -Reliability (won't have as many moving parts in the steering so less things to wear out). -Cost (not the cost of the box but the $$ I will save because I don't have to modify my radiator, fan and buy new parts to make up chain systems etc).

Update: Welding! I've been chewing through the Argoshield in the last week or so. The chassis is upside down at the moment (hopefully this will not be a common occurance). Almost ready to be turned on to one side for welding, then the other side and then back up the right way. At a guess, i've probably got another five hours work then I will be able to start mounting the seat which will hopefully be here next week.

Just had a look and it says 38mm pipe or 38mm box section or 4mm gusset plating. I read the rule wrong cause thats not gusset plating how it is. Will change them to box section.

Can I suggest making a wee plated 'ramp' up to those torsion mounts as with them being below the chassis line they might be a little vunerable if you go climbing over other cars and may get caught up and damaged which will create a bind if they get too badly hit. Better to have things 'skid' off than get fouled up and becoming a headache later. Just a thought.... Youre doing an awesome job though and keep those photos coming.

I cut off the torsion mount gussets and under rider braces today and rebuilt them. Had to think about the torsion mounts a bit but came up with something that I think will work ok. It looks a bit ugly but as long as it works I guess. I might as well use this oppurtunity to thank all the people on this board that give me advice and write supportive comments on this thread. Building a car is a big learning curve for me and it is a pleasure to be able to share the experience with Macgor's members Anyway, here's the pic's.

The thing I like the most of what youre doing is the pride youre putting into the finish of the job at this stage as that can only lead to being an awesome finish at the end. The welding is looking very nice indeed and you and your team should be very proud of what youre doing there!! Ive always said that Stocks in particular always look pretty good BEFORE they get painted as paint can hide many sins so if it looks good now,its gotta be even better with 'clothes' on!!! Keep up the great work and I must say it WILL be a shame to go out and scratch and dent it!!! Bet you cant wait till that happens!!!!

I'm trying to do everything nicely and properly so that it does look good when its finished. I'm not worried about scratching and denting it, it is a Stockcar after all. ;D They only look good for the first meeting.
