Does anyone have any photos of when saloons started in Palmy? I remember crewing for my cousin, he had an EIP Vauxhall and there were Humber 80s and Austin A30s running. Might be around 1970 ish.

No reason now that you couldn't use a full bodied Ford Y, that'd open a few eyes. Could start to see some retro hotrods in amoungst it.

Hey Brendan -Mike Wilson ran a limited saloon as 69k a few years back that had what looked like a full bodied Y. Looked cool but had evil handling from memory. There was a pic of it somewhere on here but i cant find it. Cheers

Cheers for that Sam, I wasn't aware. I suspect the 20 year rule may have been put in to push out the bent iron & spruce up the class. Now with the bland bodies (mostly), I personally think it smart to allow some of the classic shapes back. I look forward to seeing a glass 41 Willy's coupe (or 65 falcon coupe, or FJ Holden, etc.,) taking on a wedge, & winning. With the trans Tasman thing going on & the possibility of the classics turning up, this might be the class hogging the headlines this year.

On page 18 there was a Triumph Vitesse #34. Was that running the 2L twin carbs??

The chassis was of a space frame design, quite possibly the first spaceframe saloon car at the track at the time. If it wasn't the first I sure as hell can't think which car was. Always handled very well indeed. Chassis design was based on the then current midget (speedcar to you Aussies) technology, just made a bit bigger. When you aren't blessed with a lot of horsepower, you have to make the things go fast round the corners! At this stage the engine was a 2.5 litre Triumph unit, modified cylinder head and camshaft running 3 x 42 DCOE Sidedraught Webers. Bottom end and rods were balanced but otherwise dead stock. The last iteration of the engine featured Hilborn injection running on Methanol fuel, higher compression and more modified cylinder head. Magic little car, used to embarrass a lot of bigger and far more powerful cars that's for sure!
