63 Stockcars for sale on this site and only 3 have sold? what dose this say? is it the economy or are drivers spending too much on the supposed budget class? I purchased my first standard stock for $2500.00 on a tandem trailer in 93 from Dean Soaper in Rotorua ready to race.. I haven't had time to venture through and work out the average price but maybe it's time for the sellers to get real. If your building one new & selling it for a profit it's fair claim It's a cost issue and reasonable markups are expected. But once you have taken it out and thrashed the hell out of it bash & crashed your way through a season or two it's used, I know the prices of things have gone up but ?? How much are they really worth? I say drop you prices and free up the market place everything depreciates... IMHO

We get the same thread every year about this time.
My views are - there are some darn good buys in there at the moment. Current 3nz and 1st in GP car for $25k, lots of good quality cars between $15k and $22k. Add up the money to build (without your own time) and it would still usually go over this sort of money for the componentry that these cars have.
From what I can see the value has dropped on 2nd hand cars around $5k in the last one or two seasons.
I also think there is a premium to be paid for a tried and true combination (not a rally and rolled combo) - it means there is far less development work required for a new owner to try things to get on the pace.

I'm a bit erratic about how long I leave the sold cars on the page. best to keep an eye on speedwayads.co.nz/Sold/sold.htmand use the 'click here for more' option too if the list is short. My gut feeling though is that sales are slow , sign of the times I think.

We get the same thread every year about this time. Snooze you loose I'm trying to get my Post count up.. hahaha so 3 sold from 63 is normal? oops check that I'm still of the opinion they are asking too much for pre loved machinery. I know how much parts are are worth to replace. Buy a new starter motor for a mazda familia.. run it in your car for a few months and then sell it on Trade me. Is it still worth what you paid for it? No way.. and if you try to sell it for the same it will sit there just like the 60 lots of unsold Stockcars on the for sale pages. It may pop up every year but it's no less valid if the cars are not selling. It's only worth what someone will pay for it.. and the buyers are clearly saying they are think that it's priced too high..

There are some good buys out there. Every class has a cycle of highs and lows though and I think the Stockcar class peaked a season or two ago.

I am from the same era as you Shane, an ex "Standard Stock" racer, so i feel the same way on most of what you are saying. In saying that i think a few things have happened. Firstly alot of parts are rarer because of the explosion of Stockcars and everyone wanting to run the same MR2 power steering, ZF gearbox etc and also most of these cars are under 5 years old whereas my 114A was 20 or so, and i dunno how old yours was. Back then it was rare someone would drive off after getting a big slam, whereas now, it is rare the top ones fully break down so they are a heap more reliable... but i do think that the bubble is at bursting point now.

You can still get a cheap car, you do get a few 5 - 6k entry level cars coming up every now and again but you gets what you pays for I guess.
At best I think you can hope to sell your car for what you originally paid for it, provided it is maintained to an equal or greater standard.
I sold my first car for pretty much what I paid for it after having some fun in it over two seasons. What I didn't factor into the sale price was the 8k approx that I spent on it over that time!
Stockcars do hold their value like crazy dont they?

actionman that 2500k you paid for your car in 93, today pays for a seat ( albeit top range) times have changed since then and technology has increased as has the popularity of some parts.

Not sure I saw it out this last season but yes it is sad to lose someone who actually likes to hit.

I tend to agree actionman, some sellers very blunt and not interested in reality aka a K that is advertised for 12k for the last 20 months but arnt willing to negotiate so it sits in the shed for how much longer? another 2 years.....

Keep in mind also that not everyone is 100% committed to selling the cars that are listed, and are merely testing the market.
Put a top dollar figure on it and see what happens, if it sells its a bonus, if not its business as usual.

All i need is for some one to buy my saloon and then there will be another car sold in the stockcar pages. But it seems like there is only money on the west coast at the moment (due to the mining industry) so i doubt that there will be much more movement in the sold stickers till things pop up in the rest of the country.
Come on someone buy my saloon so some lucky stock car owner can get my money!!!!

A lot of cars are only on here for sale for "brownie points". They will be the ones that are really overpriced so that there is no way they will sell. This will keep her indoors happy, and you can race it next season to "advertise" it. This is what I did, unfortunatly someone came up with the required price so I had to sell it or be exposed as an addicted racer to the missus.

This is what I did, unfortunately someone came up with the required price so I had to sell it or be exposed as an addicted racer to the missus. problem is, this kind of thing gets around and people start thinking that the cars are worth more than they really are, then they start putting similar prices on.. then people get used to buying at the new price so if someone wants to hold onto thier car they put up a higher price... again people start adjusting thiers upwards... mean while theres people like me who would love to just go out and slam the money down so they can get out onto the track... but simply dont have enough to get the car... Ive looked at a few in the last two years that i would love to buy - if i only had the finance available.

Like everything ,prices have skyrocketted [ milk , bread , fuel etc etc]. Some of the prices being asked for these cars are way over the top . Good proven racecars with all of the good gear are worth the price to the guy / gal that wants to be competitive . But i think alot of sellers are just jumping on the bandwagon , and thinking it is the going price these days , before looking at the age and history of the car they are trying to sell.
What once was a budget/ affordable class is no more . There is not that much money around these days ..
