probably because they try to run it in alternative islands each year and less tracks in the south island run superstocks than the north

Correct, but I dont think its automatically given to a track. I think they still have to bid for the champs. Next season will be awesome for the south island

The allocations were pretty cyclic up until recently but now its a bid and prove the track can actually run the whole deal which Nelson has proven lots of times they have the goods.
Awesome result for a true gentleman in Smokin Joe. Young Kerry will be rapt and justifiably so. And Shane Penn...what does he have to do to win this thing???
Nelson 2013 will be a great spectacle!!!

put your bid in, pled your case & tracks vote for or against, I think it's how it's done. from what I heard, south island tracks voted for each others requests hence the massive array of titles to be down south next season (7 NZ titles out of 13 + 5 GP's).. that's not to say it's not deserved

I can completely understand people saying why has Nelson got it again when so and so track hasn't but on the other side of the coin it's hard to argue they don't deserve it with their current Super Stock ranks.
I know that's most likely got nothing to do with the bid process but if it's going to be in the South Island maybe it should be at the home of South Island Superstocks.
Personally I'm not sure but I can certainly see both sides to the story.

Personally I'm not sure but I can certainly see both sides to the story. I agree, but on that logic, Palmy would be hosting it every 2 or 3 years. Palmy is also the home and birthplace of Stockcar racing. Personally, while it would be fair to give every track a turn at hosting it, I personally don't think every track is capable. I'm not trying to put any track's or club's down, but some of them just don't have the infrastructure or facilities that it takes to run a major championship. While I think that every region should be given a chance to host it, I'd much rather have a small number of tracks, that have the facilities, infrastructure and budget, share it among themselves and put on a great show every year. There is a reason you don't see big sports games held in the middle of no-where very often, they don't have whats needed to run the event. I think it's important that our sports major national championship(s) are held at tracks that can provide everything that is needed to make it the best event possible, the fans and competitors deserve it

Could be a while before palmy host's it. ;D Noticed the board is very quiet from Palmy supporters today. Still stunned maybe? Well there's always home town advantage this weekend.

And although car numbers may be static, it may be that there are less tracks that contract superstocks these days, which from memory is also a part of the criteria for being able to host titles

Western Springs is the acknowledged birthplace (in New Zealand at least) of Stock Car Racing, but I think us NI'ers might have hi-jacked that a little and their may have been something similar started in the SI a little before that March date in 1955.....

The book I have written on the first 25 years of Stockcars says otherwise. Auckland was one of the first tracks to run Stockcars, but the class was born here in Palmy (can't find my copy atm to verify)

Now I'm really annoyed i can;t find the book, because I'm almost certain it says that the Palmy promoters got the idea from the UK in the early 60's and created the class. From memory, the book said that the Western Springs promoter was also involved in the creation of the class. If anyone else has a copy of that book, please have a look for me as its driving me crazy

Ah yes, the great Palmy myth as Ray New would try and have you believe. No doubt about the fact that Ray New was a great promoter, and great promoters never let the facts get in the way of their self promotion.
The facts are, stockcar racing started first in NZ in Christchurch in November 1954 as an addition to the normal speedway meeting. At the same time in Auckland Merv Neil had built some cars and was trying to get stockcars on the normal speedway show at Western Springs. The Auckland Council would not allow this to happen, but did allow stockcar racing to take place after the normal speedway season ended, so we had the first stockcar only meeting take place at Western Springs in March 1955, a week later stockcars ran at a new track at Te Rapa in Hamilton.
Stockcars ran at Western Springs on and off from March 1955 to early 1961. At the Epsom Showgrounds in Auckland from December 1955 to March 1959, at Gloucester Park in Onehunga from late 1961 to early 1964, at Te Rapa in Hamilton for 3 short seasons from March 1955. In Christchurch from November 1954 at the speedway track until they were booted out with too much fence damage and were forced into running stockcar scrambles all over the South Island until the Nelson and Woodford Glen tracks came along. Palmerston North ran their first Stockcar meeting on February 23rd 1963, so there was lots of history before they started. What can't be denied is that PNth took stockcar racing into a new age and from that we saw new tracks start up like Napier and Stratford, and later Forest Lake, Wanganui, etc.

So while Ray New didn't actually create the class, he is responsible for it becoming a success, and it could be argued that Stockcar Racing would not exist as we know it today if it wasn't for his input. While you are here Pallmall, who created Teams Racing?
