Its made me think, how hard would it be to somehow wire up a system on the cars dash with a red green and orange light to let them know when the race is finished a red light for a crash etc. Like an extension of the transponder system.....

I'm surprised such a system isn't already in place, thinking years back about a basic light box system. Certainly a huge safety initiative and remove any doubt of black flags, race starts, yellows etc. Somebody design a little dash digital box for this, include track position for restarts!

If anyone has watched indycar they have this setup. It would be an expensive item for drivers/car owners. Better lights at track or a "chequered" light at finish lines would be a cheaper option

Could you not have a lap counter in the car? Connected to the transponder so every time you passed the start finish line it connected to the ELS to tell you how many to go?

Im not so sure it would be expensive
Everyone has a phone, everyone can download an app, everyone could have that app talking to anything including a red green and orange light in the car
The App could be linked directly to the track system-
actually forget the phone just put a receiver in the car linked to the track system via a local network

like i said in another post, you get a white flag for the last lap so why not a flashing white light when the race leader starts the last lap, would really standout, could be mounted on top of the existing lightbox, light's in car's would be another cost, driver's pay enough now,

I think it would be just another thing to go wrong especially given the nature of stockcar racing

I think that when the winner passes the finish line the green track lights should start flashing.

I think it would only need to be brought into superstocks, stockcars and maybe supersaloons I'm sure most drivers won't mind paying a few hundred bucks for a one off.

But tracks would have to update their system so two costs. Upgrading lighting is only one cost. LED lights for example.

Aside from the recent big episode, I don't recall big issues with hits after the lights in recent history. Correct me if I am wrong. Is this a knee jerk reaction?

The biggest danger in the contact classes seems to be drivers not seeing reds when its daylight. Ideas How to solve that?

I think that when the winner passes the finish line the green track lights should start flashing. I like this - a means of telling people the winner has passed the flag, but the race is still going for the rest. Easy enough to manage I'm sure? The only other problem is establishing a means of commuincation between finished racers and those still going so there is no doubt about who is a finished car and who is still going :-\ Hand outside of the window or a coloured tag/tape piece (something obvious to drivers mainly) that says 'yup I'm finished, carry on' or something like that. Maybe not that but something similar. Does that make sense? :-\

No point having flashing green lights when there's a dust storm on the track when nobody can see the lights.
How often does the transponder break in a crash?
If the Reds were in the cars dash how would that not work.

Rather than lights how about a one-way radio system?
We've used it at Western Springs for some seasons now. Initially there were a lot of issues with it but this season in particular it seems to be working really well.
Rather than having lights on the dashboard an official could announce over the one-way radio system when the reds/yellows are activated. Perhaps the official could also announce when the first car crosses the line for the chequered flag so competitors know the race is over next time they cross the start/finish line.

This thread should be locked now it's served its purpose
