There always seems to be some discussion on the SNZ Awards so I just thought I'd put the link up to the nomination process so that nobody misses the opportunity to nominate the competitor, club, track, promotional item etc. that they want to. From SNZ site: "2019 Speedway New Zealand Awards The Speedway NZ Awards night will celebrate the 2018/19 season and the finest our sport has to offer at the Trusts Arena in Auckland on 20th July 2019 Tickets will go on sale closer to the event. Nominations are open! Anyone is eligible to nominate, you dont need to be an SNZ Member. โโโโโโโPlease click on the coloured buttons below to nominate per award. This will load a new page with a form to complete. Nominations close on 17th May 2019" Here is the link: www.speedway.co.nz/2019-AWARDS

OK I'll say it and do it as diplomatically as I can... With all due respect to the finalists, some of who are very deserving of their places and any gongs that come their way, but does the lack of discussion and generally low key responses to GSs thread mean that ppl are over the sham that the NZ Speedway awards have become, or is it still a thing?

Macgors is notoriously quiet during the off season, and the Awards this year is several weeks later than normal. I feel having an annual awards ceremony helps legitimise the sport, just like having TAB betting does. But like anything in life, what you get back relates directly to what you put in. So if clubs don't consider their competitors (to use one example) worthy of nomination, then it's not just their loss. It's the sport's loss. It could always be better, however getting all of the right nominations to obtain the most deserving finalists (and thus deserving winners) has been something of a problem since the beginning. But instead of publicly labelling it a sham, perhaps you could do some work behind the scenes to make it better?

There has been a lot of announcements made with great pride by many of the finalists on facebook about having been recognized and made the finals, and I think the standard this year is very high.
There has been plenty of opportunity to nominate entries through this post (read 2,000 times) on the SNZ site and untold shares on facebook so I think its been pretty open.
I don't think its a sham at all, good luck to the finalists and to the organizers at the new venue.

I think what people are staying is that The nominations are not visible only the announced finalists : Therefore a person could be nominated year in year out and still not get a look in :
The question would be who picks the finalists from the nominations then who picks the winner :

ive given up on the awards. so the only person the drivers need to impress is me the fan. big wraps on anybody out there giving it heaps and having fun doing it. and special mention to sheldon arapere. winning both hawkes bay and bay of plenty champs in a stock. very impressive driver through traffic. very smart and clever racer. won a race for rotorua in huntly vs stromers. he had a stand out season. always enjoyed watching him. my driver of the season.

The simple fact is that NOBODY gets to see all 2500 licenced competitors race during the course of a season once each, let alone multiple times. That's why the nominations are so important. It's not like a bunch of movies where a bunch of judges can watch all of said movies, or a sport where all of the major events are televised.
Some of the people on here only follow one or two classes and have no idea what's happening in the other dozen or so. Or only attend two or three tracks and have no idea what's going on at the other twenty. And still others find it easier to whinge than to offer anything by way of suggestion. Things will only improve if people put in more thought and/or effort.
And the old adage that "it's not just about being 1nz", holds no water for mine, as the 1nz is generally a driver that races all over the place, achieves a lot, and does a lot for the sport as well as gaining the 1nz. Rarely would a driver just pop up, win the NZ title then vanish again. But obviously wining the 1nz goes a fair way, and so it should. It's the ultimate goal for any serious competitor.

They're not giving out Participation Awards, which about all I won when I was at school haha. Or at High Scool I found I could win the Most Improved each year, by being real rubbish at the beginning of the school year and doing better as the year went on. Next year, same thing. I wasn't improving overall, but it gave me something to take home to mum and dad hahahahaha. I've also wondered why it really matters who picks the finalists and who picks the winners? Barry B

It wouldn't be any sort of speedway event without some form of controversy. It is what it is and while the nominee's and judges and their judging and stature remain anonymous it won't ever be treated as legitimate. (Gee been so long since I was here I forgot my password.......)
