Credibility Barry, the work not the person is being judged. As a matter of interest, what do other sports in New Zealand do with their annual awards, judging wise, does anybody know? Barry B a select committee is chosen by the committee members and they put it to a vote. i know the humbergs used to have 12 people on there panel. a certain percentage ex sports persons, media, and journalists.

Credibility Barry, the work not the person is being judged. As a matter of interest, what do other sports in New Zealand do with their annual awards, judging wise, does anybody know? Barry B Motorsport NZ, Kartsport NZ and Football NZ all use pro photographers as well as other members of the media. The winners are told why they won. The finalists are all mentioned as to why they are there. Credible and transparent, not decided by debate Barry. Criteria to enter needs to be addressed too. On one hand you have tracks/promoters stressing via different means the need for personal use of media item and then the awards are a free-for-all, encouragement is given to go against the requests of clubs/promoters. If you want to include the fans, then give them a cup for the best fan shot. I'm pretty sure clubs/promoters would support that concept and it also means that no matter the outcome, a fan is winning it!

Credibility Barry, the work not the person is being judged. Have been in this position and that year was all about the person not the achievement done by the competitor.

I was fortunate enough to win the Photographer of The Year Award last year - which was judged by an independent professional photographer who provided a report which was read out at the awards about why he or she thought the 6 pics in my portfolio were worthy, visually, technically and also about the accompanying captions. Unsurprisingly I didn't make the cut this year, sometimes I missed the shot or the action happened at the other end of the track or simply because the pics weren't up to scratch technically, especially at night time. My camera has a million different settings and speedway is a hard gig where the light changes from bright sunlight at the start, to shady, to a dark moonless night all at one meeting, with different pools of light on the track. Adjustments to the camera settings are constantly necessary. A lot of the official SNZ track photographers invest a small fortune in their gear (you really could buy a decent Stockcar for less) and I too have also been saving up for a new Canon f2.8 lens in an attempt to meet the industry standard. I wish all the photography finalists this year all the best, and I really appreciate all the advise and tips I get from the official SNZ track photographers community, from simple stuff like how to hold the camera better to advise on much more technical stuff like the wonderful world of PS6 Photoshop that I've recently discovered. The best advise I've received is to remember to keep having fun. Anyways, I'm looking forward to October when I can begin to try some new things and improve on my panning and zooming in an attempt to capture 6 worthy images for my portfolio entry for next year. Cheers, Pete From the SNZ facebook page:"The move to Auckland has been hugely beneficial for the NZ Speedway Awards. After being restricted to 230 seats at the Brentwood, the new venue of The Trusts Arena has meant that ticket sales have blown past 300 and are on their way to surpassing the attendance record. Be sure to be part of history and grab your tickets at www.speedway.co.nz/2019-AWARDS " PS: Don't know if they've got a band but hope ya'll enjoy the party.

I'm told that there have been approx 360 tickets sold for this weekends awards, compared to the previous venue capacity of only 240. Should be a good night out for those attending.
Good luck to all finalists.
