From Springs Facebook Page.
ACTION, DRAMA AND CONTROVERSY ON NIGHT ONE.
Night one of the Midas International Midget series certainly kept up the tradition of International Midget racing bringing the good the bad and the ugly to town.
After some fierce heat racing, a thrilling pole shuffle, won by American Buddy Kofoid, only to have it taken off him in the referees' room, and handed to home town hero Michael Pickens, we then got a main event that will be talked about for years to come.
The racing was as hard and fast as you will ever see, with battles raging everywhere that you looked, some great passes and some not-so-good moves, cars upside down, drivers venting their frustration and for many young drivers their first taste of the intensity of International competition.
Michael Buddy Kofoid was in the end a dominant winner, showing a clean pair of heels to the field in the super-fast Way Motorsport Toyota. But wait the drama isnโt over yet. Kofoid is then excluded as his car weighs in 1kg underweight. A decision that is instantly protested by his team.
Meanwhile, 2 other drivers have also been spending some time with the officials and now find themselves with 21-day stand-downs, ruling them out of the remainder of the Midas International series.
Sometime after midnight, after the prizes have been handed out and everyone has headed home, Buddy Kofoid wins his protest and is once again the World 30 Lap Midget Derby winner for 2023/24, Michael Pickens slides back into second and the Young Gun Alec Insley takes home third prize, his second podium finish in as many weeks.
It is a shame when decisions made off the track in the official's rooms have the impact that some of last nightโs calls have on, not only what was a fantastic night's racing last night, but also future events. These teams all work incredibly hard, putting in huge hours and spending significant cash to present equipment that is world-class, as they strive to put on the best show that they can. To have them suspended out of some of the best racing of the season through a fixed penalty system somehow doesnโt seem right. The penalty needs to fit the crime, and the public still needs entertaining.
Wow, if that was night one, who knows what the next four rounds have in store for us. Make sure you get along to Baypark on December 28, Palmerston North on December 30, back to Waikaraka on January 1st and the final night, โThe Bay 51โ at Baypark on January 3rd. Something tells me the action, controversy and drama of night one isnโt over yet, with plenty of scores still to be settled on the track.

In order for Kofoid to get off the weight rule the scales must be non compliant - therefore wondering if others will use this avenue in the future.

Are they weighed before or after race? Assuming they give them the chance to fill the fuel tank back up?
I do know that they are weighed with the driver

Are they weighed before or after race? Assuming they give them the chance to fill the fuel tank back up? I do know that they are weighed with the driver Weighed after the race. How you come off the track is how you are weighed. Definitely no chance to fill up and then re-weigh. The top teams run very close to the weight limit to get every advantage they can. Now with the car and driver weight there is a real benefit to get as close to minimum as possible.

Average racing in my opinion. The track just doesn't offer up good racing. Very disappointed to see 8 sprintcars. I'm glad I didn't purchase the stream. Watching these clips average racing. Yes buddy looks good.but buddy is good

Rodger that mate i see would take abit of skill to guess how many litres will last a race with cautions ect to be bang on at the end of it, bit like the v8 supercars i guess haha

How's pickens weighed when he's in his sprintcar straight away, he doesn't go across the scales. That's a really good question, yes someone else was in his midget when the car was weighed and he was in the Sprintcar on the track ready to get pushed off, rules for some, rules for others ๐ค

The rule book is the rule book. Seems absolutely crazy that a snz run event is such a shambles. Kofoid incident and now the pickens weigh in.

Lucky to have MP, only driver who can compete consistently with the best, so much easier to go and ask him or his crew, if you want a straight answer to your questions, you'll be surprised how open they are, far better than sneaking around pointing the finger and hiding .Ask if you can see his Trophy cabinet, it's very impressive.

Just seen the latest Midas points released for the series and want to make sure I have this right. Mosen gets a 21 day stand down - yet still receives points for finishing the feature and one would think prizemoney as well? This just gets more and more bizarre- yes you can keep your race points but we are going to ban you for 21 days.
Thatโs like someone committing a crime and getting to keep the stolen goods they got caught red handed with๐

Pickens' gets weighed in before the meeting in full race gear before the meeting so they can add his weight to the cars weight. Would you rather he sat in the car and missed his race. I guess his team are smart and work with the officials. The Midas series (thank you Midas for supporting speedway in the many ways you do) is run by a promoter not SNZ so points will not be affected by a SNZ decision on an incident after a race. I havent seen anywhere (and i stand to be corrected) that Brad was listed as a finisher.
