Quite a good list there Marty and if you threw in another Wildcat Wayne Richards it would not lose any anything in terms of quality.

Yep, alot of his titles came in Tank # 3 which was an absolute weapon in its day BUT there were some faster cars around at the time and he still had to steer the thing and put into the right positions to get the results . For me he was at his best in the mid to late 80's when the rest of the world was going to Spaceframes with big wheels on them, and he was still in his flat chassied Ford 6. He often embarraced the latest technologies with the pace he was able to wring out of that thing and his world 240 title came in that car against the very latest second gen Taranaki spaceys
Also I'm not sure about this but I think his NI title came in his first Ford 6 Flatty

Like a few other have mentioned Charlie Bernstein would have been one of the top drivers around - Always entertained the crowd. Evan Mooney up there as well , won the GP in 83 or 84. Played a big role in helping Charlie win the NZ champs in Wanganui in 82. Another top Wanganui driver , Bob Smith, good teams racer and another to keep your eye on the track. Others of note........ Barry Hunter Pat Westbury Kevin Free "The General" Mr Evans As for Shane Penn , yep Great Flag racer .... but bugger all else... doesn't know how to use the big metal thing at the front of the car..... prime example ...had a 4 lap run off with Rodney Wood a few years back at HB... got behind and tried to take Rodney out a few times with little success....... ( in anger that is !!! may use it to navigate thru traffic ....with a little bump here and there )

With respect, can you justify your decision. I sure wonder sometimes how others think

just how many 1nz titles do you have to win to convince everyone you are the best?? isnt the national title the benchmark of how we judge the best?? Thats what I would have thought... We knew you would have said that, but teams racing was in the question and there wasnt much that boote done at teams racing which was a stand out. For me anyway

For me anyway really?? to be selected to represent nz in a superstock test team is not a standout numerous teams nationals titles and the palmy title. and remember, all this was done in a 5 yr time frame 95% of all other drivers would spend a life time to acheive just one of those.

The best superstock driver of all time is Dave Evans not only winning all the individual major titles but also the way he helped other drivers from his Palmerston north club (ask Gary parks when he won 1nz in nelson). And teams racing I could be here all day talking about Dave Evans and teams racing.
I have read a few other names on here like peter Rees, Wayne Hemi, Craig Boote, all good drivers peter Rees great entertainer on the track but you race for??? is it Palmerston north or nelson? you help your team mates out not take them out at new Zealand champs like last years NZ champs. And thats what made Dave Evans so good if he couldn't win going into the third and final heat he would be trying his hardest to help someone with a P on the side of there car is going to be standing on the podium. Craig Boote what he achieved in 5 years of racing is great 3x1NZ but nothing to talk about in teams racing at all apart from when he flipped himself at the palmy teams champs so thats why he would be on my list but not high up it. Wayne Hemi, well what a car what a driver has won everything under the sun as well. so my list would be: Dave Evans Kevin free Barry hunter Barry podjursky Wayne hemi Murray Hobbs Craig Boote Shane Penn Brendan Higgins Lyall Rumney

Craig wasn't in the team that won at Palmy in 2000 (Hewitt, Moir, Higgins, Peterson and Morgan) Not sure about Auckland either, may have been in one of the teams but can't quite remember. Very good individual racer but unfortunately teams didn't go his way.
