What an awesome Championship! This was my first visit to Meeanee and I really like the facility...will certainly be back. The track was great and the racing even better Really enjoyed Mike and Malcolm on commentary and what a great number of giveaways! Thought some of the ref decisions could have been a little more consistent...some drivers no doubt felt a little hard done by? Great to see 16M, 41B and 96A take the podium although I have to admit to not seeing 41B coming through. Highlight for me was Peter Dickson...so impressive! Some unfortunate luck for 1NZ and 3NZ, and plain crappy luck for 8H and 7M although to Emos credit he fronted for Heat 3...I would have gone home And yet again some big names failed to qualify, which is what makes this so darn interesting. Right...time to start saving the pennies for Cromwell! Anthony

Well said Anthony and yes track prep was unreal.it isn't easy keeping a track together over two nights and yes a few decisions didn't go the right way but done and dusted so bring on Cromwell 2016 2017 season. Watch this space.

The track was great , last time I attended this event at Meeanee finals night was a slick no passing dusty snooze fest. Not so this time and as pointed out by the excellent commentating pairing of Mal Sines and Mike Wilson running the event later in the season no doubt helped in this aspect. Mal's on the spot reporting and insight into the class also lifted the event magnificently." Gordon thank you so much for your extremely kind words. It's taken me a day or 2 to figure out whether I should reply and if so how. Because ironically last week I was at a point where, for various reasons, I very nearly gave it all away. It wasn't until around 3pm on Friday that I was even confirmed to be commentating the NZ Super Saloon Champs. So the positive comments from people could not have been more timely. So I greatly appreciate them, as it restores my belief in that there are people for whom informative and entertaining commentary really does matter. And my apologies for missing the change from 15 to 20 lap heats, but my last minute call up (I was there to spectate), and time spent fixing their FM transmitter just before the meeting started, meant I was nowhere near as prepared as I would like to have been. A huge thanks to Mike for letting me join him, it's always an enjoyable pleasure. Also thanks to the drivers for their approachability, candidness & professionalism. And to everyone involved behind the scenes who made that the best balance between a great Super Saloon spectacle & a real drivers Championship, we'll done - that was something else. Brilliant racing all weekend. The unpredictability and excitement of this class is hard to match anywhere in the world of motorsport. So many great stories unfolded, Mark Osborne's 5 point victory was as deserved as it was sizeable. And the podium rewards for Graeme and Lance shows why this class has so much going for it. Anything can, and probably will happen in a field with such breadth and class. Commiserations to the guys who found bad luck, Burs - drive shaft, Richie - brake caliper lap 1 heat 3. Emmo - drama after drama, but kept at it. Steve Flynn - engine, then repairman for brother Grant, who was so close again but for a minor error that cost a critical 3 points. Fluffy who was flying in heat 1 and a real chance, Steve Williams who trashed his car. And I guess Craig C & Donald G won't be buying Christmas cards for the officials this year. Mark Pitcher couldn't buy a trick, while Bryan Commerford showed how quickly you can improve your results if you keep working on what plagues you. Maybe his desire to just race and enjoy it, regardless of results is the key and an appropriate thought to end on. Regards, Mal Sines

Awesome Mal. Great take on the meet. You are one of the top 4 commentators and truly deserve the accolades.
My concern is that you went there as a spectator, and got roped in to help Mike. Mike is good, but would of needed help. If you carried on spectating then the event would have suffered.

Mike is good, but would of needed help. If you carried on spectating then the event would have suffered. And therein lies one of the big problems within speedway sonic33. Many tracks don't really give commentary a second thought when it comes to planning a major championship meeting, even though they sometimes begin planning as far as 18 months out. And for the fans, the paying public, many of them who have travelled a very long way and spent a vast amount of money just to attend, well they deserve better. There are many good local-track commentators who are completely out of their depth at a national title meeting, and this is where a specialist commentator who is right in to whatever the particular class is, can be worth his weight in gold. And for Super Saloons that is 100% Mal Sines. And even when the local guy is more than capable, as Mike Wilson is, the amount of information coming through at such a meeting is too much for one person to relate to the fans anyway, no matter how competent he is. And most good stories have to first be noticed, then chased - they don't get delivered to the tower with the 50/50 raffle results. Too many meetings suffer from mediocre commentary, not terrible, but certainly not as good as it could be for the sake of a bit of organisation and a tiny addition to the overall meeting budget. We should be striving to rise above mediocrity, it's not that difficult. Some tracks get it. Some tracks don't. Generally on macgor's we only read about commentary when it's extra good, or more often we read about commentary when it's extra bad. Generally over the years we haven't read about it too much at all, as macgorians generally don't comment on things average. I'd like to be reading more about successful commentary efforts, after all, it's often said commentary can make or break a meeting, but tracks have to make the first move here by ensuring they have appropriate commentary teams for each and every meeting. A good commentary team can hold your attention and make an average sort of meeting feel better, the same as a great meeting can be dragged down by a lack of information. But it needs to be relevent information too. We do not need to be "told" after each and every race how great said race was. Whether it was a great race or not is up to the customer to decide. Two things assisted Mal in doing a good job with Mike at this meeting in my opinion; 1; He loves the Super Saloon class and as such knows the class and the drivers inside out. That shows out in his commentary, to the advantage of fans tuned in. 2; He spectates as well as commentates, and as such knows what a spectator wants/needs. Many commentators never sit on the other side of the fence. They need to, regularly. Barry B

Agree 100% Barry. Well said. There is no doubt that word for word What Barry has said is totally correct and more. No one has more knowledge as to the insight of the make up and the workings of a Super Saloon and the history of the drivers and can tell the spectators some of whom have never seen a Super Saloon all the interesting aspects to hold their attention and to add value to some of us for updates on the class things we weren't aware of. Mal does not over-hype he just tells it as it is and his wealth of knowledge sure adds another dimension when ever he is on the mic. Unfortunately local announces don't always have the latest info on out of town or the other island drivers. Mal knows them all by first name. When it comes to a National title how long before we have a specialist team that will advise or take control of the event. There are so many aspects to running a title that a local club just don't have the experience or know how. It's not that they aren't capable but some committee's change frequently and may have never been faced with an event of that size and are completely out of their depth. Like would the NZRFU let the local rugby club at Eketehuna host the All Blacks -Lions for example. One specialist national title committee could say cover Super Saloon and Saloons and another one for say Super stocks and Stocks. That way their would be a consistency of the titles and all the pieces would be in place. And I can guarantee you their are so many pieces that most people would be unaware of unless you had been personally involved at a promotional level with years of experience. Just think about it, do what you always do and you get what you always have. or harness the experience and knowledge of some clever people and raise the level to the same extent the competitors have with world class race cars.

Malcolm came on board late Friday afternoon and was a vital cog in the meetings success, heck anyone that can make me sound good i'm all for it!!!

He's made a lot of us sound good over the years Mike In that case I think you went from having "A" specialist Super Saloon co-commentator engaged to "THE" specialist Super Saloon co-commentator.
