A question for spectators ... Very much appreciate your thoughts regarding smoking in areas with fixed seating, stands. I was amazed to read of the Warriers 'no smoking' edict 2 years ago and so well received. NOTE: This is NOT about banning smoking at venues, it's about non-smokers being forced to become smokers when someone lights up around you. Your thoughts please ...

As you know I am a smoker myself, and I'm not above having a grandstand puff. (ooooh... a bad guy that guy!)
Fixed seating is a good issue to bring about. I had no problems with Palmy's policy on previous visits (is that name ©?) and had no problems buggering off between races for my fix. Likewise, I stopped thinking that proposed legislation for banning smoking in pubs etc was a denial of a human right one night when I was at the Casino, and found the smoke overpowering.
So long as at some point I get to fulfil my right to kill myself slowly, in some place away from those who don't want to share it, I cannot see why such rules cannot work. Just as long as I can see the track....

Speaking as a non-smoking asthmatic spectator at BP the stadium is so big and the crowd is so few - It is not a problem. Not very PC i know, but my opinion.

If all smokers could think like That Guy, the world would be a better place. They get to do what they like, and the rest of us don't suffer. Good on you "That Guy"!

im also a non-smoker and have had a few occasions where someone has lit up and we have had our 10 month old son with us and he has had a little cough as the smoke came past us. People should be able to smoke, its their right just like its their right to smoke at baypark if they pay their 20 dollars to get in. sadly its a small minority with no common sense or consideration for others around them and i think that a "smoking area" is a good idea aslong as those who use it are not disadvantaged in anyway i.e. having to leave the seated area and go out back or not have a reasonable view of racing. well thats my 20 cents

What really upsets me is when others around in fixed seating area's smoke stuff thats illegal to smoke. Suffered that at teams and was not happy at all. Foul smell. Ignorant b-----ds.

As a life-time non-smoker (influenced by my mother being a 40-a-day smoker, who died from emphysema), I have a low tolerance for second-hand smoke. Most major sports venues now have no smoking policies within the seating areas, and fair enough. Surely, it's not THAT big a sacrifice for a smoker, regardless of how addicted, to go a couple of hours between ciggies, or to be responsible a la That Guy.

Geez for the price you have to pay to buy smokes..why would you want to share with non-smokers? AMI stadium (aka Jade/Lancaster Park) has a no smoking policy in any of its seating. Had the job of telling people to put out or get out. Even use to get a man in my ear telling me that someone was smoking in row TT seat 285. As a reformed smoker..I don't mind stealing the smell for free, but don't want my kids to be around it.

I am a non smoker and think that people who puff all over you are sometimes selfish & ignorant..but thats ok as they dont live so long !!
.........However...... if they stop people smoking in the wide, open spaces of BayPark, as its a danger to your health...... then
Guess What will be next............ They will ban RACECARS as the exhaust fumes are bad for you health .......then, eventually the pleasure of Farting will also be banned..... then I will get P...d off
All a bit silly really
Cheers

You asked for OUR thoughts.... Your wish is our command.... The seating at BayPark....is out in the open as far as I ( yes I ) am concerned......not inside... I can tell you are a little " testy" about the subject....... Just relax and imagine a non-farting regime at the Park... Whats the world coming to !! Cheers Wiseowl

If they ban farting I'm outta here. One of life's greatest pleasures hahahaha. Re Baypark, they had a huge crowd in for the Demo & Caravan Derbies, so it either has to be a blanket ban or not at all. You can''t say we'll wait until everyone is seated and then decide............
Also, when you pick your seat, you shouldn't have to get up and move again if the person next to you suddenly lights up. Smokefree, or at least designated areas, is a great idea IMHO.

As a smoker, i dont have a problem moving away from the masses to have my fix. Its about being considerate to the people around you. Even I hate it when someone lights up near me while in a crowd. Its not hard to go for a walk between races.

I know that the ASB Stand @ Eden park is completely smoke free and you see heaps of people out the back having a durry. Give people a choice - to not smoke in the stands or leave your seat and head out the back. IMHO

smokers have just as much rights to be sitting where they want to sit as non-smokers do.
why should smokers have to move, why can't the non-smokers move?
if i sit in a seat where no one else is around, and then people start sitting near me, should it not be "i was first here, you don't like me smoking, then move!"
maybe a Bay Park they should make turns 1 and 2 non smoking family areas, no one seems to sit down that ways anyway...

I would tend to agree with you about if you are there first except for a small problem in the plan. You turn up to Speedway and head to your favorite spot trying to find somewhere to sit and you sit down in between some people (usually due to lack of space). Half an hour later they light up and the wind blows the smoke in your face. By this time there are very little good spots left to sit in shy of sitting right behind the safety fence.
The only solutions to this problem is tapping your neighbours on the shoulder and asking if they smoke then go and sit somewhere else or have an area(s) for smokers to sit.
These smoker area(s) can be in good viewing locations as well so that everyone can still enjoy the racing.
Just my thoughts and experience
