I think I have sorted out the flat spot problem.... I am throwing away the HQ master cylinder and replacing it with a booster/master cylinder from a Laser. The ol' story of replacing Holden with Ford, always gets things going better ;D ;D

We went to practice on Saturday but only had one run as there was still a massive flat spot. The handling was heaps better thanks to John Bookers help. Shane Bennet is helping me with the carby at the moment and we are making progress with the flat spot. Have some timing issues to work through as well, as the timing had moved a huge amount from when it was originally set which will explain the back firing probably . Just need to find out why it has moved though and then we can carry on with the carb work.

did you have much trouble fitting the booster in? Yeah I did. It was a bit tight and then I had to modify the accelerator pedal as well. Took about 10 hours all up.

Put a new dizzy cap and rotor on today. Realised that the old one was 180 degrees out which meant it didn't lock into place and had a bit of movement. Set the timing back to where it should be and the motor stopped. Started the car again and got flames, backfiring and smoke!! So something is majorly wrong and its not just the carb. I will do a few checks tomorrow and see what the day brings but one thing is for sure, I won't be racing opening night. At least I will get a bit more time to finish the trailer. ;D

what was the go with the dyno? would have thought after all your hard work, that having handed it to experts, it would have been returned with absolutely no problem, just a thought tho, if u remove no1 plug turn it over till it compresses, check tdc and alignment marks on the pully as a start, then reset the dizzy cause your firing order is up the creek, as for the flat spot, check the squirt on the accelerator pump, and float level- bung on the side, and if you can fit a pressure guage to check fuel pressure, soon give you an answer, hope it helps,

Just done all my checks and it turns out the crankshaft pully has moved which is why the timing is appearing to be out. I will replace the pully probably on Friday and then reset the timing then will be able to continue on with the carb work.

I'm not sure what happened with the dyno but there is a problem with the carb. When you give it full throttle there is a big delay from when the fuel stops coming out the jet thingys on the side to when it comes out the boosters in the middle. No fuel = no go = flat spot. The dude thats helping me with that knows what he is doing so we will get it sorted.

had a thought too, sure its a 350 not a 500, the later will cause a flat spot with the wrong metering plate, anyway good luck.

After much work we believe that the flat spot issue on the car is now sorted. I picked her up from New Plymouth this afternoon and she sounds a hell of a lot better. She has colder spark plugs now as well as a rebuilt dizzy. The carb has also had some more work. I just a few jobs to do on her tomorrow afternoon after I get up (night shift tonight) and then we will be off to the track if its not raining.

Well we had our first race on Saturday. Half a race actually. ;D Stopped for a red light and then couldn't get any gears again. I have a new master cylinder coming tomorrow which will hopefully fix the problem. Fingers and toes crossed. I was happy with the 5 laps that we got though. The car was handling real nice after the setup tips from John Booker and seemed to be going ok.
