Well, after changing the master cylinder the clutch seemed a lot better. Started and finished three races last night so that is a big inprovement over the half a race from the previous weekend. The clutch still went away a bit in the last race though and was whining a bit when the pedal was depressed I will look into that over the next few days and see if I can find what the problem is.

Time for a bit of an update I guess. The clutch is good. I've had no more issues with that. I have been making progress with the handling and by the third heat on Saturday it was pretty good. Just need to sort out the missing/stutter/flat spot thingy. I thought we almost had that sorted but no. It is so annoying being left behind on the start, red lights and in the corners when I know that the car can do better. Maybe its time to try a new carby or something, I don't know yet. If anyone has any suggestions, let me know.

just like to say cheers for the under 23 champs man was good to race in even tho i got smashed in the last one but what carb you running? if its a demon then go holly i heard from rees that you do lose a bit of power but 1 in 3 carbs are broken before they leave the factory. you will never have any problems with a holly thats what we run and what hartley runs aon all motors now.
but at the and of the day that is just me not trying to tell you what to do only trying to help.
cheers svo

Awesome thread there Jarod.
It seems to be dwindling, but Im one of the 116,000 plus who have helped to bolster the numbers. The detail and consistent updates have been brilliant as an ignorant to much of what goes on to make a stockcar.
With the engineering skills of a pencil, I would buy a used car over what you went through, but well done on starting, doing it properly and ultimately finishing and racing the car. Top marks !!
Any further info you put up, I will watch with interest as I feel in a tiny way 'part of the car', as far as having watched it being built.
Big pat on the back, this could have ended differently,
Hooncorp.

I have a new dizzy module coming in the next few days which should be able to eliminate the eletrical side of things as being a cause of the stutter/miss/flatspot thingy. Over the past few weeks I have replaced nearly everything else so if this doesn't fix the problem then I will be able to concentrate on the carby side of things. Hopefully I will make some progress somewhere along the line and will be able to get the car performing closer to its potential than it currently is.

Stick with it im sure you will sort it, thanks for the updates along the way, agree with autopete definetly the best thread. Once you get the stocky sorted maybe you could start again and show us how to build another class of car...(tui ad)

Been a while since I put an update on here!! I've been flat out all week making last minute improvements/repairs to the car and spares for this weekend at Wellington. Most of the previous problems I have written about are now cured. The engine is now sweet, as is the handling (fingers crossed). The latest issue I have been working on is the brakes. They were too strong in the front and every time I touched the pedal the car would sledge towards the wall. That issue is now hopefully improved after fitting some different pads tonight. Will find out soon enough I guess. Didn't even have time to test them down the road as we were running out of time and just finished loading the car at about 11pm.

Time for an update? The NZ champs in Wellington saw a continuation of our teething problems. Brake problems once again mainly. They were so bad that there was nothing there when we gridded up for the second heat. Not really that good when you are running at the front on a wet track and the cars behind are giving you a punt coming into the corners! Our fuel tank was also identified as being illegal at this meeting so we would only get one more meeting at Stratford before the tank needed to be changed. Before that next meeting I changed the brake fluid to a hi temp version and also made a cover over the exhaust and wrapped it in heat wrap to try and stop the fluid boiling and it seemed to work ok. We started to get a bit of reliability with the car and were actually finishing races and then that was it for a while. Had a few meetings off while I saved up the $$$ for a new tank and then raced last weekend at Stratford in the Taranaki Champs. Qualified for the finals (first time qualifying for anything) and then got flat right fronts in both final heats but at least the car was starting to handle and be reasonably competitive. Then onto last night, I only had two races. I let one of my crew drive in the other. He hadn't raced since having a drive in the old car a couple of years ago but he got 2nd!! The best placing the car has ever had. The car was a little off the pace and now the brakes are giving me problems again so I will have to have a look at the setup and brakes this week before out last meeting on the 28th.

A bit of unsolicited advice, check that the piston in the master cylinder is returning fully when you take your foot off the pedal. If it doesn't come back all the way it keeps some pressure in the lines, which overheats the brakes. It's a problem I had, and just a little bit of track surface got in behind the seal when I water blasted the area and after a couple of laps the brakes went to mush, and didn't come back all night.

It's a problem I had, and just a little bit of track surface got in behind the seal when I water blasted the area and after a couple of laps the brakes went to mush, and didn't come back all night. Thanks Paul. I checked the piston and it is definitely returning fully. I Pulled the whole brake system apart over the last couple of days. I took the master cylinder to Steve Hall and got him to check that out which was OK. While I was there I discussed the problems I was having with him and he reckoned that it could be a caliper twisting or jamming on or something similar and heating up the brakes. On the left rear I found that the new pads I had put in had an extra piece sticking down which was rubbing on the brake disc. I don't know if that could have been contributing to the brake issues or not but if nothing else, at least I have solved the problem of the scratching noise at the rear! On the left front I noticed that the brakes were sticking on a bit so I replaced the stub just in case it was fractionally bent. I also replaced the disc but the brakes were still sticking. Lastly, I replaced the caliper and now they don't stick on so hopefully that was what was wrong and they will now be OK. Will found out tomorrow night I guess. I will be totally stumped if there is still an issue as I have been through everything now.
