Pall Mall team started in 1969/70 season. Original lineup 1969/70: 2 Graham McLachlan, 3 Dave Greer, 16 Sam Ferabend, 28 Lawrie Hines. (6 Joel Wright subbed for 28 when Lawrie hines was injured)
1970/71: 2 Graham Mitchell, 3 Dave Greer, 6 Joel Wright, 16 Sam Ferabend, 28 Lawrie Hines 1971/72: 3 Dave Greer, 6 Joel Wright, 10 Graham Mitchell, 28 Lawrie Hines (0A Ray Wright subbed twice for 10A). That was the final season of the original team.
For 1973/74 a new differently funded team was launched, this only lasted 1 season. 26 Colin Brockliss, 28 Lawrie Hines, 91 Vic Cook, 92 Graham Baker.
The original team concept came back for 1974/75 and 1975/76, the last 2 seasons of the Pall Mall team. Drivers in those seasons were: 3 Dave Greer, 6 Joel Wright, 10 Graham Mitchell, 72 Noel Gerhardi, 99 Andy Andreson, 100 Tony Neal.
The team originally started as a promotional tool for Rothmans who at that time were spending a lot of money supporting speedway. I think originally Peter Howarth was approached, who then got Sam Ferabend and the Waikaraka promotion involved and the team was formed with the best available drivers. It was never an Auckland team as such, although all the drivers used were Auckland registered.

My father is Laurie Hines and was part of the original Pall Mall team. He won the Championship in 1971/72 but this doesn't seem to be documented any where. Does anyone have any additional information on the results of this year. I have photos showing otherwise.

The NZ Stockcar Champs were held at Waikaraka in 1971/72 season won by Phil Joyce. According to the official results your Dad was 6th. I am pretty sure that he may have won the "World" 240 1/4 Mile Championship in 1972 which was a promoters event, and that is probably what you have photos of. Would love to see any photos you may have to post.

You maybe right. I have some photos and some correspondence from Rothmans. It's quite funny as they were rewarded in cigarettes! I can scan these tomorrow and send them through. My father was not the most popular on the track but held his own. I would like to make contact with some of the other drivers. I am sure Vic Cook has now deceased but would be interested if any of the others from the original team are still around.

Pall Mall, just read another post. Dad was "Top Cat" for many years. Were you part of the team?

No I wasn't part of the Team, just around the scene and friends of Graham Mitchell, Sam Ferabend, Joel Wright, and Graham McLachlan amongst others from the Gloucester Park through Waikaraka days. All the above are still around and about. I haven't seen Vic for a while, but I think he is still with us. Dave Greer is still about up in Northland, so maybe it is time the Historic Stockcar Club held another Reunion for the old drivers.

Sorry, I thought he died. I will email Dad tomorrow to get some more information and I will scan some photos through. I was a little girl back then so bear with my ignorance.

Thank you for the information. I have attached some photos, not too sure how they will come out as the quality was not good to start with. There is also the letter to my Dad from Rothmans offering him his position in the team. My father has boxes and boxes of old programmes, I think he has got every one ever printed! There also scap books galore of news paper articles, mostly about himself of course! Attachments:

I have ask, where did you get them from? The photos I mean, and this is just out of interest. Most I have are only digital, not actual printed photos. Sourced from many great folk who have allowed me to scan their collections over the years, plus what I still have from being a track photographer a long time ago.

What are the chances that we can get these guys together again? I am pretty sure I can convince my father to come over from Australia. Do you think Waikaraka Park would come to the party?

I can just see a bunch of mobility scooters painted in PallMall colours. It'd be a hell of a race. That Ferabend would have the big advantage, weighing half as much as the others. Maybee there should also be some black ones sent up from Palmy to show the PallMall team how its done! BL
