It matters not what happened last year, except that people forget the major impact the rain out at the NZ Champs at KK had on all superstock racing in the later part of last season. Personally I think that the Auckland event usually sees better on track activity than Palmy, but lacks the Palmy atmosphere. If it happens, it happens, if not move on. That's okay for us Aucklanders, there were out-of-towners who got burned on accommodation etc last year who will be extra careful this time around. Once burned, twice shy. If it gets scrapped at the last moment again this year I'd say it will never be resurrected. It would be a sad loss to the calendar after over 20 years of action, so I have everything crossed that the ASSCC pull it off in 2011. We get burned every year for accommodation out of town due to rainouts etc (have done on numerous occasions this year all ready). Doesn't stop us making the effort again. To be honest I can understand why people would book motels etc a long way out for events run in Stratty, Palmy, Vegas (over holiday period) etc, due to the lack of options, but we are talking about Auckland here with literally thousands of motels! Why anyone would need to book months out for up here escapes me! Anyway, I believe last year that it was cancelled a week or two out from the scheduled dates anyway and with 99% of motels, if not more, only requiring 24-48 hours notice to cancel bookings at no cost, I doubt anyone honestly got "burned" anyway. Just sounds more dramatic by saying they did!

Agree that WP lacks the atmosphere. How do they change this I don't know, maybe look at the rugby sevens, make it a one day event.. I would happily pay $50m-$60 but would to have entertainment . If WP have it this year i will be going.

Jamo, I know of people who were burnt on flights too (and people DO book them early), and while I think cancelling a meeting is very different to a rain out, it's probably a detrimental discussion in the overall scheme of things which is hoping this meeting gets off the ground this year!!

I've run some numbers and I don't think the equation is all that bad.
My analysis is a simplistic but should get the point across.
Friday Night Adults - $25 Families - $60
Based on 1,000 Adults and 300 families that would mean $43,000 income.
Now of course you have to put on a $25 show but I honestly believe Waikaraka can. The solo grand prix has been listed but I thought we ran that at the postponed NZ Mods so lets get rid of that. The Minisprint GP should be a one-nighter so lets get rid of that.
Given the Superstocks will take warmups we only need to run 3 support classes. So this is what I would do.
8 x Superstock Teams races 3 x Modified races incl 20 lap handicap feature (why aren't Mods on the existing schedule?? Premier class in which you have the best numbers of any track in New Zealand) 3 x Saloon races 3 x Streetstock races
Saturday Night Adults - $30 Family $70
Based on 1,500 Adults and 400 Families that would mean $73,000 income.
Of course we have to put on a $30 show and dammit we are going to do just that! Again, 8 superstock races so only 3 support classes required.
8 x Superstock Teams races 3 x Stockcar races (UK Stockcar format with $500 stirrers prize) 3 x Saloon races incl handicap 20 lap feature 3 x New Zealand Minisprint Grand Prix (Fastest to the front feature)
That's $116,000 of income without taking into account sponsors, food caravans, bouncy castles and other incidental income.
I'd be interested to know the total cost of running the meeting but lets budget for $100,000. That leaves a surplus of $16,000 for the club.
I'd like someone in the know to cast their eyes over these numbers and provide a few thoughts.

I stopped going to the Auckland teams champs many Years ago after a title that was decided without an actual final race. It was when Auckland had 2 teams and Stratford had 2 teams. The Stratford gladiators won there semi but were protested out which meant for an all Auckland final, then i think it was the team Clark proctor was in that could only front with one car so they defaulted and Auckland won without a official final race.
I assume Auckland will have there own team at there own teams champs meeting so they should be able to front with a team to travel to palmy, this will help get the support of the other teams to travel up there, they could even advertise the event on there cars couldn't they?

oops - But i must say that the Drivers earn every cent the get and i doubt if it covers the costs most incur. Each of these guys risk machinery well in excess of the 50k you suggest the club fronts up with. If the club cant make the numbers work let another club try!!! If another club Wanted to do A Superstock teams event and found it viable to do so would be doing it,as Sonja said Rotorua stopped theirs because it was not financially viable anymore they were going to help out Auckalnd last season but being short of teams and at late notice it was too much to give the event justice and they did not want to run a half pint event

I'd like someone in the know to cast their eyes over these numbers and provide a few thoughts. Ok you should stick to reviewing meetings not planning them.... Lets look at fixed costs Track Preparation x 2 Program Printing Costs Tow Trucks Ambulence x 2 Staffing Costs x 2 Advertising Starts Early due to a two nighter SNZ Licences Maintance Fund (This season has a Fence Fund built in to each show) Security x 2 In total (not place to provide a breakdown of each cost) $24,000 in Operational Costs On Your placement you belive you can acheive those crowds on that proposed gate take hmmmmm..... I think a Friday Night Fireworks show would be the only draw crowd to reach that and that takes your operation costs (no travel, prizmoney even paid yet) to inexcess of $30,000. Then there is this meetings x 2 portion of the rent that needs to be factored in as well. So if you budget for $35,000 on your total income Percy (which is optimistic) you believe that the prizemoney over two nights to run this event will be $81,000. $81,000 to pay Teams (1 from the south island) to race over two nights, plus provide "good" support classes and todo that you need money to put on a good show (Just ask Jamo about the dirt cup and the money gone in to establishing a decent feild of Mods) You will not be able to make it work it's my thoughts that unless a good sponsor comes on board or teams realise that gone are the days of big $$$$$$ then this show is not going to make money? Surely the question is asked why would any organisation risk $100,000 plus to perhaps to at best to breakeven.... just because its a great event..... If the venue could hold 10,000- 15,000 then go for it? If it is such a money maker why hasn't BayPark an ideal venue for this had a crack at running it? Just my thoughts..... (don't shoot me )

Just a small point, if i remember right Palmy didnt send a team to Auckland on more than one occassion and Auckland still fronted at Palmy so I dont think the Allstars missing Palmy would be good grounds for a Manawatu no show. Just hope both meets go ahead with both clubs involved. yes Barry B grrrr you keep knocking Auckland not going to Palmy(not set in concrete just yet)with failing to mention Palmy have skipped going to Auckland a number of times ...you naughty boy

first off i think critics who nag and bag this event because of the efforts from last year should have some heart, as pallmall said curcumstances changed with the new zealand champs been rained out and the dates so close togeather the chances of people going from such an event straight into a teams nationals would be silly i run a stockcar and find that dare enough
i believe if everyone spreads the word bring the whanau up and get bums on seats it could be an event to remember and can in someways reach the magnitude of palmy not quite in atmosphere but in everything else.... i personally think there is alot more action at the teams nationals then at the teams champs and no matter where you are on the bank at the teams nationals its pritty hard to find a seat when everyone is standing up shouting and screaming
the year before last with the midgets i think they run the track was in awesome nick and man were those cars flying
stop bagging the park buy your tickets and support us so what if we dont have a team for palmy.... do you have a team or could you put one togeather in what 2 weeks... good luck waikaraka we will be there

In the earlier years (especially) of the Teams Nats, Palmy often wasn't there (or sent a second-string team), true , but Auckland never had trouble attracting the required amount of teams either so they weren't really missed. Not sure Auckland's been to Palmy every year either have they? Whatever, that was then and this is now. With regards the Allstars, I think you might find that concrete is pretty solid by now Marty. I noticed an Atlas truck out that way a few days ago........

How come, the most BRUTAL, the most EXCITING, the best region vs region motorsport that in John Websters day (he wrote a sponsorship proposal for me) was the 2nd biggest spectator sport in NZ, cant get a decent sponsor while guys doing the same motorbike jumps for 3 hours straight and people flying planes, and little kids hangin their car sideways and boats that hardly anyone follows can get massive sponsors from companies who want to promote themselves as extreme and brutal etc?? Is it the family thing, or is it that people think "Bogan" rather than "Cool"when they think Stockcars?.. or is it cos we focus too much on racing rather than being a show, with personality?? I have no idea, but it has always made me wonder WTF?

That's an extremely good question alloyplatypus, and one we could have the answer to if the members would vote SNZ and/or SPANZ to employ somebody with marketing nous to investigate such things. When Bruce Robertson proposed such an idea at the remit Conference of 2009, the idea was soundly defeated. Because of such decisions by the members, the sport remains stagnant while opportunities pass us by.

It all comes back to sponsorship. If we are going to see the "team nationals" survive, how about every club puts up say $5000 at start of season into a "teams nationals" account, and then each club gets a turn hosting it. At the end the club running it pays their costs, and if any left over gets split back to the other clubs. If a sponsor wants to come on board all good.

i have thought long and hard about chatting here, having put to teams champs on in auckland i know what it cost to bring the teams up,the funny thing about bagging auckland for not going is usually it is about car numbers, but when palmy never show it was about the fact they never got enough travel money, what i found funny was it was dearer to travel up to auckland than it was to travel down to palmy, aaron your close in 2000 i was give a budget of 73,000 dollars to get 8 teams to auckland and i still had to make up a team of stds and supers, so i understand how hard it is to get teams, ps good thing was the travel was paid out in cash on the friday night and I'm sure we got a fair bit back through the bar lol so i say good luck to the auckland boys for getting it off the ground.

Honest question:
If the entry cost both nights for this meeting to proceed were $40.00 / adult (special advanced purchase 2 day pass price of $70.00). $15.00 / child (special advanced purchase 2 day pass price of $25.00) and $100.00 family, 2 x adult and 4 x kids, (special advanced purchase 2 day pass price of $175.00). Would you pay it?
If it guaranteed that the event would run with the best teams, agreeable format and appropriate support program are these prices indicated out of kilter??
You tell me!
To put on the show I reckon this is what needs to be charged to make it a happening thing. Would the crowds come??
