4B John McIllroy (I think Robbo now runs the 4B number) 18B Kerry McIllroy Kerry was another of those crowd favourites that used to be in large numbers at Meeanee, depending on which side of the fence you sat of course. He was never scared to deal out the hits and seldom neglected his duty to entertain the fans in the way we wished. Where is he now?

The Laking chassis is now in the hands of 75a Dave Tennant, although it doesn't look as good as it did then, now runs a Holden V8. What Car are you talking about

Ian Glenny has to be one the best all time drivers, good for a nuts stir. He knew how to take some one out.

Another one I apologise to bump up. But some great HB photos in here, but does anyone have anymore of Mr Glennys history. Up until his final moments. He was a great driver to watch over the years. Boy I would have loved to see what he could do with a Superstock in the new century.

Ah yes Racerman some real memories for me there. You could also add Colin Topp the his mighty mini (he was originally from Gisborne).
Special favourites of mine, although many will be scratching their heads as to who they are included Gig de Ridder in his speedcar, Dusty Rhodes in 16B TQ, Noel Alexander in his TQ an later in a Hillman Imp stockcar from memory) and stockcars Max Pederson 45B, Jack Ellis in Dirty Thirty 30B, Mick Donovan in 2B, Steptoe Strong in the Ferret 41B, and Dave Laird in 1B. I just loved those old green Vanguards of his for some reason. Dave never set the workd on fire but he was always a special favourite of mine when I was a little boy.
Keep the memories coming please

the late Colin Topp with that noisy Mazda, brings others to mind, the late Stuart Lyndon raced both Solo's and Saloon cars, (He went to the US and raced stockcars on the east coast somewhere, I recall catching up with him when he returned home a circa '81 when He raced a few shows in Glen Whittingtons TQ, Sadly he was killed when he returned to the US in a racing crash) As well as Bruce Spargo who raced Solo's and Stockcars, sadly he perished in a crash at Thunderpark Raceway, . Shows that speedway is always in some family's veins with Mick Donovan being TQ and Sprintcar driver Paul Donovan's dad, I think that it was Dave Alexander who raced a Imp bodied Stockcar 77 (I stand corrected but will find out, still have a few contacts back home) I remember going to Noel Alexanders with his son Gavin and D ick Whittington to pick up a JAP speedway engine some years back! You are right Higgins some special times growing up at Hawkes Bay Speedway at Meeanee, Apparently Johnny Maultsaid went on and raced NASCAR stockcars at Melbourne's Calder Park Thunderdome.

Terry Lays car motor was from the states and was out of a 6 cylinder mustang and those of you may remember how the manifold you st to get red hot. I remember one time when he had blown the ford motor we installed a 350 Chevy straight into it and took it to Gisborne to race, way oversize and went real well. Also that figure 8 race that is in the thread, if my memory serves me correct he won it and got the enormous amount of money.$400.00. That was about two weeks pay and i know we drank a fair bit of it on the way home. Also i remember Tub Warner building his first new car in our back shed and that was how i got into speedway. Actually the guy that gave me his Car to drive for the season only passed away about two weeks ago,his name was Hippy (Brian Whittington). The next season i went and bought my own for 25 pounds raced that for a couple of seasons then bought Arthur Loaders car for a $130.00. Yes i have seen affair bit of speedway over the years. I still have my original rule book and only one and a half pages of rules, started in1967 and still there Cheers Geoff Harris Alias Stumpy

What about heros from other classes? Try Steve Todd and Grant ? ? ? in the TQ's - they used to have amazing battles starting half a track behind everyone else. (these days they complain about fastest off the back ) It wasn't an issue for those guys - just great drivers and great cars. sorry no pix - but I'd love to see some
