Both of these events are important for speedway in NZ its a shame that we dont have a body administering the sport that can foster and grow speedway for everyones benefit.
It would be nice if Baypark and Huntly could swap events!!!
That way I could be at both the NZ Supers and the NZ Mods in ChCh,
Alot more room on the BayPark track as well ?
Unfortunately at this stage we probably wont be attending the Huntly Event and will stay in the south to watch the flying Bunter.

I agree Shane both events are very important to speedway and they should both be growing for the betterment of the sport but no lets see if we can stomp on something , like I said I'm a greedy person and I want to race in everything everywhere . So we will have to see what happens, Cheers 77k

Agree about the track swap idea, at least we would have people like Dean still racing this coming season and a couple more I know. When will SNZ wake up to the new centry.....

I have both sitting in my workshop at the moment and I nearly ended up with a Modified on the way home as well!!!. As I have pointed out in the past I don't really care what I drive as long as it gets my blood pumping and is competitive. At one point someone said that the NZ Champs takes priority over the DHL series. The problem that is I raced locally until I won all our local events then I moved to the other tracks , then the island champs, and then the nationals. The problem is that when you get there and win the nationals you look around for the next step and what do you do next? I think this is the major reason why you see so many national champions that exit the sport or look for another grade to compete in. We can justify the expense and time chasing a goal in life, but it becomes hard to continue this once you have achieved it to justify doing it all over again. Obviously not everyones the same and I can only reflect on my own experiences. Geoff Fletcher, Dean Waddell, Bunter Pierce, Maurice Cowling, Skinny Colson, Shane Maaka, Blondie, King George, Tony Cardwell, Geoff James, these are all guys who have either Retired or exited the sport or changed grades after winning the National title. Saturday night racing at your local track just isnt enought to spin my wheels anymore and maybe it is the same with these guys. unless something is created to bring these Guys back into the sport then it will continue to struggle as speedway always has. The events that would interest me would be NZ Super Saloon Teams Champs, Regional run-offs to find the teams and then national Finals Australia vrs NZ And of course the SSCAR series is underway as well. (Organised and run by drivers for drivers) For any of this it requires a body to drive these events. I believe that each grade should have a body that is elected by the drivers in that grade and they should be responsible for the rules, Championship Allocations and any Series operated in that grade, They should negotiate with promoters to run the championships and events and for the benefit of the competitors, which ultimately means the crowds and the sport, we lack this at the moment this thread shows that with the confict between the DHL and the National Saloons. SNZ should be the body overseeing the sport and in a Governance role. SPANZ should be a body that gives a voice for all of the promoters, funded by the promoters and not involved in title allocations. I agree Neville swapping the events would be a great way to fix this current problem, however if everyone agreed that it was the best thing to do Spanz would find a way to stuff it up,!!!!!! P.S. I'm sorry if I dissappoint you Neville but with 10 NZ champioms out of the grade it leaves room for someone else to win! I am very confident that a supercharged 6 clynder will be more than competitive, not sure that I said it was for me tho

Supercharging works very well on speedway tracks if you can keep below 95 decibles and have the knowledge about them. Lunchbox

Lunchbox[/quote] $120,000 for a normally aspirated engine poking out 750+hp is a little beyond most peoples budjet, and thats a huge barrier for most to enter the sport. A 4litre poking out the same is $20k so it will be interesting, these engines are already in use around the world and make good reliable hp and torque, but they also have gears which we don't so thats the only possible problem. Failing that I still have that 2 x NZ Champs winning engine under the bench, its old but reliable just like me!

I think that's a little misleading, as many of those named carried on and won multiple titles before retiring, and age has caught up with some of them too, as it does with everybody eventually. Some didn't retire or move on for years after their title win. Everybody eventually retires, including those that wn a National title. The Super Saloon division has probably been the most stable of all over the years.......

Are you suggesting Dean and two others would be racing this season if their title was raced at home? Yet they can't tow over the hill?? Interesting.......... And as the current championship allocator and criteria setter, it is SPANZ you should be suggesting needs to change their thinking. That is not an SNZ role, although remits lodged for the AGM may change all that.......

Spanz and that relationship is a big part of the problem with this sport, they look after the promoters at the expence of the competitors and the sport.
As for the other point, If there was something worth racing for and the nationals where at Baypark you watch how many competitors would turn up for it.
I think that there should be some benefit from winning the national title and the winner should get to Decide where to defend their title, have the national title at their contracted track in front of their sponsors and home crowd.
My guess is that the promoters would be encouraging their competitors to go to the national events to win titles for them, this way it would be performance based not just bullnuts, beer and buddies the way it is now.

When will some of you people wake up and understand the system that is in place. It is up to the promoter of a specific championship to submit what ever date suits him or her. They are the people who understand the local situation and economy. Why would BayPark run an NZ title at a time other than when the most visitors are in the area and hence the championship stands the best chance of drawing a good crowd .making a good buck and increasing the exposure of Speedway to the greatest possible number of people As much as the DHL series has become a regular series it is just that a series run by a person for a select number of competitors. Hence a NZ title takes precedence. We cant all watch all the speedway on offer all season . Choice unfortunately must be made

This rubbish is what keeps the sport out of the main stream.

Agree with the first point, being, whatever date suits a promotor. Different promotors are clearly motivated to achieve quite different outcomes, depending on their personality type, club run, private profit run, etc, which may not include the best for those competing and the national advancement of speedway. This is exactly why SNZ should regain control of our most significant events, to better ensure continuity of outcomes!!!!!!!! I include formats in this comment. Bye the way, Bayparks smallest spectator numbers (as in 1500 or so) are around New years! No wonder Steve has pulled the plug, and likely not just for next season, when folk refer to the DHL Series in such an understated manner. Reality is, a bitter pill to swallow for some, that the DHL Saloon Series and Steve Williams has single handedly achieved more for speedway in New Zealand (re-read the Strategic Plan and Vision) than any single NZ Championship, than the combined efforts of the SNZ Directors, SPANZ and or any individual promotor! The DHL series adds value to 7 seperate tracks over 7 nights, attracting increasing spectator numbers and media attention with each passing season. Benefits have been enjoyed by the saloon class, it's competitors (not just those participating), tracks and the wider community with media hype and displays. Largely the championships provide an opportunity for a few to polish their egos, demonstrate the size of their bank balance, a promotor to put more money in the bank - but attract bugger all new competitors and likely even less new spectators to our sport, do little to acheve SNZ's vision and strategic plan.

Well put Murray, Steves effort in both grades have been enormous and his profile has raised the profile of speedway both in NZ and around the world., you have got my vote.
Let the reigning champ decide where he or she should defend the Title
Barry the competitors in each grade should decide what best for them, clearly you disagree, your stance is inline with how the current system works and which will see this years Super Stocks running for $30,000 less in prize money than was offered!
The competitors need to be empowered and some common sense needs to get back into the sport, I definitely won't be voting for you.
By the way Barry, you say you don't like the existing system how about you be honest and let us all know what you think should be the way that the national titles are allocated and whom should decide it???

All I can really say is Shane, no successful form of motorsport that I can think of, in fact probably no successful form of sport at all, has the rules made, and where the major events are staged, by the comeptitors/players.
