The Wanganui Vulcan's (Drivers, Managers, Crews and Supporters) extend their heartfelt sympathy to Peter's Family. We are shattered at the loss of our friend and regular visitor to Oceanview. Peter was an awesome competitor on the track and great bloke off it. He'll be massively missed by the Speedway fraternity.

We meet Pete at the start of this season out at Oceanview, we had just purchased a lifestyle block and were looking at getting into farming on a much larger scale. Pete made time to talk with us during the meeting about the best ways to get into farming and what to do with the one we had just purchased. He said to us " I run my farms like I race my car" we all had a big laugh at his comment as all we could think of was how he drives on the Track!!!! but he proceeded to tell us that people thought he was mad at the risks he took with his farms and property's and how life is about risks.....sometimes you win.....sometimes you don't. Pete you are a true hero in both Speedway and the farming fraternity and as I write this I am reduced to tears at the thought of not seeing your smiley face again, but we have faith in the knowledge that you have given all of us and wish your family all the best. Tony & Kylie James 18v Stockcar

It's incredibly sad to be typing condolensces for a bloke who was in the sport for all the right reasons. I will remember Pete Barry as someone who travelled to entertain people. As one of those guys who puts bums on seats through his exploits on the track.
He would have to be one of the most talked about competitors on this forum. The fans loved his antics and it was always a priviledge to be watching.
The circumstances are especially sad given he put his hand up to help out a team in need.
A very sad loss for the speedway community today

2 years ago and the Crusaders were short a few drivers for our venture to the NZ Teams. Me and Kelvin Bull raced in Meeanee a few weeks prior and i got talking to Beatle. Youre short a driver, my mate Peter Barry is mad keen to teams race. Beatle introed us, and the guy just had sumthin about him, so friendly, and just nuts to race. In the weeks running up to teams alot of people asked who were on our team and id rattle the names off, and get the reply "whos Peter Barry?"lol.. how that was about to change! He did awesome down there, and i can honestly say ive never heard of another driver going from a novice in Stockcars to quite possibly the most popular driver nationwide in such a quick time!
This year the Kings were short, needed a fill in man and Barry stepped up. My mate Brad Ridland told me before most knew and he was ecstatic about having Barry in his Stockcar in the team! Alot of people on the boards were hell excited too (including me). The guy had become a legend in less than 2 seasons!
Peter, it was a pleasure to race with you and follow your career as it grew meteorically, and from my short experience of meeting you, i know you are going to be sorely missed by many, many people. My condolences to Peters Wife and Kids and to all his mates down at Meeanee Speedway
Your ex Crusader team mate, and fan Jamie Bryant 61K
